Australian Man Surfs Whale Carcass Surrounded By Sharks

The Australian man who jumped off a boat and climbed onto the dead carcass of a humpback whale on Saturday said his parents have labeled him an “idiot” for his actions.

Despite the fact that tiger sharks and at least on white shark was circling the whale’s carcass on Saturday afternoon, extreme sport lover Harrison Williams swam toward the whale’s dead body and sat on top of it. The 26-year-old noted that the decision was spontaneous and that he never thought about the consequences of his actions.

Though Williams initially claimed he had climbed on the whale in order to save it, he later admitted that the incident was a challenge.

“I was out on a boat with the boys and one of them said it would be pretty funny if I surfed a whale so I just did it,” Williams said. “At first I couldn’t get a grip and I ended up using my chin to drag myself up.”

Williams recalled that his friends had shouted warnings to him, but that the sharks were busy chomping on the dead whale and never noticed him. Despite pulling off the stunt unharmed, Williams said he wouldn’t do it again if given the chance.

“It was definitely a stupid act but I didn’t mean any disrespect to anyone,” Williams said. “Mom thinks I'm an idiot, and Dad isn’t too proud either.”

Maritime authorities reported that Williams won’t be fined since the whale was already dead and he didn’t remove any part of the animal’s body. On Sunday, officers from the Department of Fisheries began monitoring the whale’s body in order to ensure it wasn’t disturbed again.

The whale’s carcass is not anticipated to wash ashore for some time, according to a spokesperson from the Department of Parks and Wildlife.
