Aunt Charged with Homicide in Pit Bull Mauling of Toddler

West Haven CT - On December 22, Erica Hobdy, 30, of West Haven, was arrested for the mauling death of her 20-month-old niece by her boyfriend's three pit bulls on September 30, 2011. reports that Hobdy was charged with criminally negligent homicide, first-degree reckless endangerment, and risk of injury to a minor, in the death of the baby girl, Neveah Bryant.

On September 30, Hobdy was babysitting her sister's daughter in her apartment where there were three pit bulls that belonged to Hobdy's boyfriend. Lt. Robert Proto of West Haven Police said the child had been lying on a blanket on the floor in the living room and the dogs were shut in another room. Somehow they broke out and attacked her.

Police reported that the toddler was bleeding profusely and was unconscious when officers and paramedics arrived at the third-floor apartment shortly after 6:00 p.m.

The coroner’s report stated that the baby had more than 80 puncture wounds and a vein in her neck had been severed.

Hobdy told police she went to the corner store for a drink, and her son did not properly close the doors. When she came back, the dogs had gotten out of a bedroom, and Neveah was lying on the floor, not breathing.

The arrest warrant shows that Hobdy's pit bull named Neo attacked a 9-year-old child in a 2007 incident. And a year later, another one of her pit bulls attacked and bit a 9-year-old friend of her son Danny, according to

Hodby's dogs had also killed a Jack Russell Terrier being walked on a leash by its owner in 2010.

The baby's mother told police she knew the dogs were vicious, but she ”trusted Erica to keep her daughter safe.”
