Both engines have failed. U.S. Airways flight 1549 is rapidly losing altitude. An air traffic controller tells pilot Chesley Sullenberger that he's cleared a runway at a nearby airport for an emergency landing. No need, says Sullenberger, "We're gonna be in the Hudson."

Today the Federal Aviation Administration released audio tapes from the now famous flight's cockpits, revealing an inside look at Sullenberger's heroic decision to land the plane in the Hudson River instead of risking crashing into New York City.

Compiled by the Washington Post, the audio begins shortly after the plane loses thrust in its engines and ends once it has hit the water.
