Residents of the small German town of Winnenden are struggling to understand why a local teenage boy would storm into a school and kill several students and teachers before leading police on a chase that would result in several more killings and his eventual suicide.
According to police, 17-year-old Tim Kretschmer entered his former school Wednesday morning and fatally shot a number of people, most of them women and girls, before hijacking a car and eventually hiding in an auto dealership where he engaged police in a fierce gun battle. After being shot in the leg, Kretschmer then turned the gun on himself, according to police.
The carnage in Germany occurred just hours after a gunman in Alabama went on a similarly murderous rampage.
