Artist Paints in Public Parks, Posts Pictures on Web, Under Investigation

A female artist from New York reportedly defaced various rocks in numerous National Parks with acrylic paint and posted her work on social media sites.

The artist, identified in news reports as "Casey Nocket," is under investigation. posted screenshots of Nocket's cartoon-like portraits in "Yosemite National Park, Crater Lake National Park, Carrizo Plain National Monument, Sequoia, Bryce, Zion, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Grand Canyon, Canyonlands, Rocky Mountain and Joshua Tree National Parks."

Nocket reportedly posted the pictures on her Instagram and Tumblr accounts, which have both been taken down.

“While we can’t discuss details of a case under investigation, we take the issue of vandalism seriously,” National Park Service spokesman Jeffrey Olson told “Vandalism is not only a violation of the law but it also damages and sometimes destroys often irreplaceable treasures that belong to all Americans. It is not only criminal, it is thoughtless.”

In addition to the federal investigation of Nocket, there is a petition on the White House website to press charges against the 21-year-old artist, who has been skewered on the web this week.
