A man in Columbus, Ohio, shot and killed an intruder after he kicked down his door, according to reports.
Around noon on Friday, the 71-year-old homeowner said the intruder kicked his door down but didn’t get any further than that before he was killed by just one single shot. “Some guy broke into my house, and I shot him,” the homeowner told a 911 operator.
Neighbors described the homeowner as a retiree who lives by himself. “He's a nice guy, you know? He's laid back, quiet,” neighbor Chris Grant said.
The intruder, later identified as 31-year-old Michael Rinehart, was reportedly dead when police arrived and discovered him on the homeowner’s front porch.
“Somebody kicks in your door and they're coming in your house, you don't have to wait for them to come in your house,” Columbus Sergeant Rich Weiner said. “There's a big difference if somebody's outside and they're 20, 30, 40 feet away and they're not inside your residence — different story. But somebody is kicking in your door and they're coming in, most people might consider that to be a threat and they can take action.”
Police questioned the homeowner following the incident and he was later released. Authorities said the case would be referred to a grand jury.
