Armed Citizen Project Going Door to Door to Give Away Shotguns in Orlando, Near Where Trayvon Martin Was Killed

Members of the Armed Citizen Project are giving away shotguns in Orlando, Fla., just 20 miles from where 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in 2012.

Program director John Ritter said the practice is “perfectly legal” because the guns were transferred by dealers with a Federal Firearms License (FFL).

Members are going door to door handing out fliers for their free shotgun giveaways.

“That doesn’t mean we should all have a firearm,” argued Robin McLaughlin to WESH. “I would not need to have a shotgun.”

McLaughlin has lived in the neighborhood of Sunshine Gardens for 25 years and said she didn’t see why the group would want to arm its residents.

“No,” she said. “I would not need to have a shotgun.”

Earlier this year, Armed Citizen Project told a National Rifle Association conference that it intended to hold free gun giveaways in 15 cities across the country, including Chicago and Houston.

The organization’s website says its 29-year-old founder and executive director, Kyle Coplen, “is on a mission to help law-abiding citizens in crime-infested neighborhoods across America by giving them a free shotgun.”
