An inmate in Pinal County Jail in Arizona is in the hospital after he pulled his own eyeball out of its socket with his fingers, authorities say.
Sheriff's officials in Pinal County say Colin Corkhill was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of attempted murder, auto theft, aggravated assault, and resisting arrest.
He was originally housed with other inmates in a cell, but detention officers saw him punching himself in the face while he was in the shower, so he was placed in his own cell under a mental health watch.
On Friday, detention officers making a routine cell check noticed blood on the window of Corkhill's cell.
They then saw the man laying on the floor with his right eyeball out of its socket.
Corkhill was taken by ambulance to the Florence Fire Department, then flown by helicopter to a hospital.
Doctors were unable to save Corkhill's eye.
