An Arizona sheriff has announced that his deputies will begin placing crosses near the sites where the bodies of illegal immigrants who have died while attempting to enter into the U.S. are found.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio said that the white crosses would help remind people just how dangerous the journey across the desert can be.
“Desert crossers are dying in unknown numbers due to the desert’s brutal conditions and excessively high temperatures,” Arpaio said. He said that four bodies have been discovered over the past four days.
Each cross also will be numbered and assigned GPS coordinates so that people can use them to call for help, the sheriff said. "If we have to do 1,000 of these, or 5,000, we'll do it," Arpaio said
Arpaio's county does not run along the border, but many people cross through his jurisdiction when trying to sneak into the U.S., Fox News reported. He has been an outspoken critic of President Barack Obama's border security efforts in the past, also thinks that the federal government should pay the costs his office incurs for body recoveries and rescues.
