The 'hacktivist' group Anonymous has claimed responsibility for taking down the website of a San Antonio’s Northside Independent School District in retaliation for requiring students to wear badges with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chips.
The website for San Antonio’s Northside Independent School District was unavailable at times throughout the weekend and into Monday, reports RT.com.
Through the Twitter account @RemainSilentz, one participant in Anonymous stated: “DOWN AND OUT – Boom, track my *ss like you track children you pervs."
An Anonymous member using the alias 'tr1xxyAnon' wrote in an online statement: “I sincerely hope you have noticed that I have took down your website for a reason, and that reason is stripping away the privacy of students in your school. What was going through your mind when you had this idea?”
John Jay High School and Anson Jones Middle School, both in the Northside Independent School District, have required students to carry RFID ID cards so that the schools can track students for more accurate attendance figures, which helps the schools get funding.
However, last week a judge issued a temporary restraining order to prevent John Jay High School from expelling student Andrea Hernandez for refusing to wear an ID badge.
