Jack Pawlowski was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly shooting a toy BB gun (pictured) and showing his toddlers how to fire it in a public park (video below).
According to CBS New York, Pawlowski said that he took a toy gun and two of his kids to a nearby park in Queens, New York. The park was filled kids and their moms, some of which, thought the gun was real.
“At first I thought I was hallucinating,” said Maria Smilios “He pulled out this gun.”
“The next thing, he took his son, who is 3, and showed him how to use it, and then the family took turns shooting the gun. He gave it to his daughter, who took off on the bicycle and started racing around the park with the gun pointing this way and just started pointing it at the kids,” added Smilios.
Leni Calas, also a mom, told Pawlowski to take the fake toy gun and his kids and leave the park because the plastic toy gun was a "firearm."
“I don’t tend to take things lying down, so I went past the parents, and so I walked straight over and I confronted him,” said Calas. “I mean, he’s brandishing a firearm and I don’t care if that firearm is plastic. That’s unacceptable.”
Even though both moms were told it was a toy gun, they still referred to it as a "gun" or "firearm," which it was not.
Calas called police who tracked down Pawlowski and arrested him at home in front of his wife and three kids watching.
“I hope in the end, he understands at least somewhat why people became angry that he came here with this gun,” Calas lectured.
“I feel a little bit like a victim because someone overreacted,” said Pawlowski’s wife.
Pawlowski was charged with reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a minor, resisting arrest, and possession of an illegal BB gun.
It's unclear how the children or anyone else were endangered by a BB gun, but New York City does have a law banning realistic-looking fake guns.
