American Woman Brutally Murdered On Vacation

An American woman was reportedly killed by a man with a sword while on vacation on a Caribbean island with her husband.

The 39-year-old's body was discovered about 12 miles outside the capital of Grenada, St. George's, on Jan. 24, no more than half a mile from where other tourists had been sunbathing, the Daily Mail reports.

It is believed that she had been viciously raped and killed on the first day of her island vacation after arriving at the world-famous La Sagesse resort.

The suspect allegedly attacked the woman and her husband with a cutlass as they walked along La Sagresse beach.

News of the horrendous slaying has rapidly spread across Grenada.

Sue Hardy, a 63-year-old British woman's magazine journalist, was one of many British tourists on the beach when the incident began around 11:30 a.m. local time Jan. 24. The couple had arrived at the resort the night before.

“There was a sudden commotion near the little pen-fronted restaurant, which faces out on to the beach,” Hardy told Spice Islander, according to the Daily Mail.

“Some guys were shouting and people were running," Hardy said. "At first we didn't know what was happening. But gradually rumors started spreading among the tourists.”

She said that there were around 30 people on the beach, including children, and the tourists had started to become anxious and uneasy.

“The staff were very tight-lipped and it seemed they had been told not to say anything to alarm the tourists,” Hardy added.

“We saw the guy who owns the place running to his jeep and speeding off -- he was probably going to talk to the police," she said.

“Gradually we put the story together," she added. "It appears the American woman tourist -- described as 'very beautiful' by one member of the staff I spoke to -- had gone off for a stroll along the beach with her husband.”

According to the witness, there is about a half mile stretch with a restaurant and apartments located on the main beach where the hotel is situated.

Hardy said that her husband escaped from the attacker to run half a mile back to the restaurant and hotel area to get assistance for his wife.

“Some staff ran back to the deserted beach but by the time they got there she had been murdered,” she said.

“I was told she had been raped too," Hard added. "They said she was lying on the edge of the water. I don't know how she was killed -- maybe the attacker, or attackers, held her down in the water and drowned her, I just don't know.”

This is not the first time tourists have been killed on the island paradise. Back in December 2015, a man was charged for murdering a 26-year-old Canadian mother of two while she was jogging, the NY Daily News reported at the time. Her body was found days later in a makeshift grave.

The local police department and resort have yet to comment on the recent incident.
