Authorities have issued an Amber Alert for a 9-year-old girl after her uncle reportedly abducted her on May 4 in Rogersville, Tennessee.
Gary Simpson, 57, pulled his niece, Carlie Trent, out of school, claiming her father had been involved in a car accident before driving off with her in a 2002 Dodge white conversion van, the New York Daily News reports.
He allegedly also told school officials she would not be coming to school the next day.
Carlie’s family and Simpson’s wife, Linda, grew concerned when Carlie did not return home after school. Carlie lives with the Simpsons.
"She gets off the bus at my house and she didn't get off," Linda said, adding that she's has repeatedly called her husband’s cellphone since but hasn’t been able to reach him.
Linda said she suspected her husband had been “up to something bad” before the incident occurred.
"I'm very worried. I'm very concerned," she said. "I think she's in a lot of danger. I don't see why you would kidnap a kid if you weren't up to something bad."
Linda says she has no idea where her husband could have gone with his niece.
"I can't think of a clue of where they might be. I'm just sure he's probably hid out somewhere in a remote-like place, where he thinks nobody might find him. I'm sure he's smart enough to not be out where someone might find him,” she said.
Police have issued a warrant for Gary's arrest and describe him as a 5 feet 10 inches balding man wearing glasses. His niece has blond hair and blue eyes and is about 4 feet 8 inches tall.
It’s not the first time a relative has kidnapped a child, causing authorities to issue an Amber Alert.
On May 5, a Colorado mother, Wendy Arellano, was arrested for kidnapping her 7-year-old daughter, America Arellano, KKTV reports.
The woman had lost custody of her child in January, officials say. America was later found safe 11 hours later and the mother was arrested.
