All Male House Subcommittee Aproves Bill Banning Abortions At 20 Weeks

Republicans in the House Judiciary subcommittee voted to advance Rep. Trent Frank’s bill limiting abortion at 20 weeks to the full committee on Tuesday. This bill would apply not only to D.C., but the entire nation.

All four Democrats who voted against the Pain-Capable Child Protection Act argued that it is unconstitutional and doesn’t allow for rape victims, incest victims and others to get proper treatment.

Democrat Reps. John Conyers and Ted Deutch objected to the all-male panel that ultimately moved the bill along, arguing that legislation governing women’s bodies should not be written by men alone, especially those with no medical experience.

"No good has ever come from an all-male committee deciding the law about a woman's body,” Conyers said. “This is not appropriate."

Deutch focused on the family, shaming representatives for inserting politics into an affair that has gone from “the greatest exultation” married couples may feel to the “depths of despair,” referring to couples who make decisions for the sake of a child’s potential future.

The proposal comes along shortly after an Arizona judge struck down a 20-week ban on May 21, calling it "unconstitutional” under the authority of the Supreme Court.
