Alabama Teen Forced To Leave Prom For Dress Deemed Too 'Provocative' (Photos)

An Alabama teen was kicked out of her prom after school officials deemed her dress too “provocative” and inappropriate.

Alexis Craft, a 16-year-old Seminole, Alabama, student and regional model had the controversial dress made for her by designer Destani Hoffman. When Craft went to prom in Pensacola, Florida, with a friend on Saturday, May 9, she was subsequently told to leave because the slits on her dress were too high. The dress, she was told, defied the dress code.

“It had panels in the front cut all the way to the crotch all the way around,” Pensacola High School Dean Marsha Regina said. “When she walked it was up to her crotch and it swung open and she had nothing else on underneath it."

Craft said she wore the same dress to a prom at her high school with no issues, so she didn’t think twice about its design or the dress code when she arrived at the Pensacola prom. “I made it to the ticket booth and I handed in my ticket and I was about to walk in the door to the dance,” Craft said. The teen, who refuted Dean Regina’s claim that she wasn’t wearing underwear, said that one of the school officials lifted up the middle of her dress without her permission and in front of a crowd of people.

“I didn't give her permission,” she said. “She picked it up, looked at my underwear, and said 'That's not appropriate.'"

Craft was reportedly told to leave but was given the option to return if she changed into an appropriate dress. She decided not to come back.

“I felt humiliated, like I was harassed by adults, and I lost a lot of my confidence,” she said. “I just wanted to leave as soon as possible because I didn't want to cry in front of the people who embarrassed me."

Regina denied that anyone lifted Craft’s dress and revealed her underwear, and rejected the claim that staff embarrassed her.

“We let her in because when she walked through, the panels were laying flat and it looked like she had on a big coat of some kind,” she said. “When she turned the corner and walked,” Regina added, the height of the slits became apparent.
