AirAsia flight QZ8501 is still missing after losing communication with air control shortly after takeoff.
Flight QZ8501 was traveling from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore, and went silent at 6:17 a.m. local time, reports Reuters.
Earlier, BBC reported that prior to losing contact with Indonesia’s Surabaya airport, the flight asked for an “unusual route.” In a recently released statement, AirAsia Indonesia said that the plane “was requesting deviation due to enroute weather before communication with the aircraft was lost while it was still under the control of the Indonesian Air Traffic Control (ATC).”
The flight reportedly had 162 people on board – 155 passengers, 5 crew members and 2 pilots. Of the people on board, 156 were reportedly Indonesian, 3 were South Korean, 1 was French, 1 was Malaysian and 1 was British.
