A 5-year-old boy was taken to hospital after his penis got stuck in the netting of his swimming trunks.
The frightening incident happened in September 2015 in Mexico when a British mother and her young son were enjoying a vacation.
“After spending hours in the pool, I went to take his swim shorts off to shower,” Laura Collins posted to Facebook, according to News Corp Australia. “The netting in the shorts had got caught around the end of his willy and was literally strangling it. He was screaming a scream I hadn’t heard before.”
Hotel staff helped Collins rush her son to the hospital, where the penis was saved.
“Thankfully, he managed to wee so no lasting damage,” Collins wrote.
But Collins' son has a lasting memory of the incident.
“He talks about how he nearly lost his willy on holidays and goes on about the naughty netting,” Collins told the Mirror.
The incident might serve as a warning for other parents. Collins said hotel staff told her they'd seen similar situations happen multiple times and that they warn parents to remove the netting from swim trunks for children.
And there are other stories to back them up.
In Canada, a 5-year-old boy's foreskin got caught in the swim trunk netting in 2014.
“I could see part of his penis was through the little tiny hole [of the mesh]. It was swollen,” said the boy's aunt, Debbie Snow, according to Global News. “It was about the size of a small baby pea. I’m thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, what do I do?’”
“The small hole of the mesh in the bathing suit had basically snagged his skin, his foreskin, and that snagged skin had swelled. We couldn’t get it off him at that point,” said the boy's mother, Michelle Hilchie-Sinclair.
They took the boy to a hospital, where staff cut the shorts off.
