A Texas State student, who had her driver’s license suspended for refusing a Breathalyzer test, has become an Internet sensation after trading in her regular ride for child’s battery-powered Barbie Jeep.
“Riding a bike around campus sucks,” 20-year-old Tara Monroe told the San Antonio Express-News recently. “Like really sucks.”
Jail records in Hays County show Monroe was arrested Mar. 4 on DUI charges. Her license was automatically suspended because she refused the breath test, according to the Express-News. Not long after that, her father drove to her school’s San Marcos campus and took her vehicle.
So the 5-foot-3 industrial engineering major took to Craigslist to look for an alternative that wouldn’t involve walking or pedaling. She settled on a $60 pink Barbie Jeep, listed by a little girl named Charlene.
“When we drove up to buy it, Charlene asked where the little one was to test drive it to which I replied, ‘I am the little one,’” Monroe said.
She named the Jeep Charlene in the girl’s honor.
Since buying the wheels, Monroe has driven the Jeep — which has a top speed of about 5 mph — around her Texas State campus as well as University of Texas at Austin’s west campus. In her wake she leaves behind onlookers snapping pictures to be posted to various social media platforms.
Those photos have now generated stories from out-of-state outlets like The Kansas City Star. Monroe’s photos have also shown up on E! Entertainment’s website and at the Daily Mail.
“This is the best way I could have gotten my 15 minutes of fame,” Monroe told the Express-News. “Basically, it was the best decision I’ve made in college, yet...
“ ... It goes pretty fast when it’s just me, so I usually make [my friends] walk behind me like parents taking their kid out to play. I’m just happy everyone thinks this is so hilarious.”
