A vintage photo of a handsome military man quickly went viral, with many trying to figure out who he was. The result was shocking, as the man in the photo was someone people across the country know and love.

The man in the photo was none other than veteran actor Tom Selleck, who is known for his various television roles as well as his signature mustache. He recalled his time with the military in an interview with Military.com.

"I am a veteran, I'm proud of it," he said. "I was a sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry, National Guard, Vietnam era. We're all brothers and sisters in that sense."

Select joined the Army after enrolling in the University of Southern California and starting to pursue acting at the advice of a drama coach. He was eventually hired by 20th Century Fox, where he learned the craft.

"I think, when I went to Fox, I was on my own with no frame of reference, no connection," he said. "I'd never done a play in my life. I started at about 35 bucks a week, and every six months you either got fired or renewed. If you got renewed, you got a raise on their term contracts."

While with Fox, Selleck was issued draft orders for the Vietnam War. He subsequently joined the California National Guard, but when he returned, Selleck was dropped by Fox.

Selleck pushed forward despite being fired, and finally achieved significant success when, in 1980, he was offered the leading role as Thomas Magnum, a private detective operating in Hawaii, in the CBS crime show "Magnum, P.I." The show ran for eight seasons and cemented Selleck's celebrity status. He's starred on shows such as "Las Vegas," "Blue Bloods" and "The Closer" since, and also had a major movie hit with "Three Men and a Baby," according to Biography.

While some readers instantly recognized Selleck's face in the military photo, others said it took some time.

"He's much more handsome now, he grew into himself in a great way, guess I'm slow i didn't recognize him in uniform, love both shows he's been in," one JumbleJoy reader commented on the site's Facebook page.

"Gorgeous wonderful Christian man. He still very much looks himself. Unrecognizable to who ?? A stupid man ? Certainly not any female !....lol. Obviously, Tom Selleck," another added.

"You didn't recognize that face? Or at least the dimples? Shame on you. One of the most handsome and kind man on this earth," another wrote.
