The 23-year-old parolee accused of fatally shooting 1-year-old Antiq Hennis in his stroller believed he hit the boy’s father and bragged to a friend “I just shot that motherf---er,” according to the New York Post.
Dequan Breland and his accomplice Daquan Wright, 19, were arrested early Friday in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Breland, believed to be the triggerman, and Wright were hiding out in a housing complex there.
Police said Breland’s intended target was Antiq’s 21-year-old father Anthony Hennis, a reputed Crips gang member.
“He was told, ‘No, you idiot, you shot the kid,’” a law-enforcement source told The Post.
When Breland learned he killed a child, the source said, he was distraught.
“He started to cry. He was very upset and worried,” the source said.
Antiq died Sunday, and his funeral service was held Friday night.
When Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced the arrests Friday, he said the boy’s father was not cooperating with police.
Anthony Hennis has 25 arrests, many of which are drug related.
“Everybody’s afraid of the father and his family,” the source said.
The two suspects are being held in lieu of $1 million bail. Their arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court is scheduled for Saturday.
