Father Says Abducted Girl's Kidnapper Was 'Obsessed'

James Trent, the father of missing 9-year-old girl Carlie Marie Trent, said her alleged kidnapper, Gary Simpson, is "obsessed" with her and wants her all to himself.

Carlie was allegedly taken from her school in Rogersville, Tennessee, by her uncle (Simpson) on May 4, Fox News reports. She remains missing as of May 12.

On May 10, James told WVLT-TV that Simpson, 57, knew his daughter her entire life and would often take care of Carlie along with his wife, who is James' biological sister.

"He had access to her every day," James said. "He was obsessed with her. He wanted her, and he wanted her all to himself. That's a scary thing to think about."

James added that he doesn't think Simpson will hurt Carlie, but he does worry about her mental and psychological state once she returns home.

"It would be a great moment [when she returns], but then again it'll be a scary moment because I'm just wondering how she's going to be," he said.

"Is she going to be as happy as she was? Is she going to be scared to death of everyone? That's what I worry about. She just won't be the same."

An Amber Alert remains in effect, with numerous tips pouring in to authorities from all over the country. Police said that as of this moment, none of the leads have proven credible.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) said it believes Carlie could be in grave danger, Fox News reports.

" ... We have credible information that Carlie Trent is in imminent danger of serious bodily harm or death," TBI spokesperson Josh DeVine said at a press conference. "When we say this child is in danger, we absolutely mean it."

The TBI also retracted an earlier report which stated Simpson bought camping supplies at a nearby Walmart on May 4. Officials told the Knoxville News Sentinel that Simpson actually purchased clothing for a man and little girl -- including a bikini and girl's underwear -- cosmetics, a throw blanket, and a pink lounge folding chair.

Police said they believe Simpson is driving a 2002 white Dodge conversion van with Tennessee plates that read 173GPS. The van is described as having a dark stripe down the middle with a light gold running board on either side.

Carlie is described as being 4-foot-8 with blonde hair and blue eyes. Simpson is described as being 5-foot-10 with brown eyes and hair but is heavily balding.

There is a $15,000 reward for Carlie's safe return. Anyone with information on Carlie or Simpson's whereabouts should call the Rogersville Police Department at 423-272-7555, or the TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND.
