A caged pit bull puppy that was found starving to death in a damp Pennsylvania basement is on the road to recovery after a nonprofit animal welfare organization came to his rescue.
The pup was discovered at an Erie, Pennsylvania, residence on April 15, The Huffington Post reported. Director of The Anna Shelter, Ruth Thompson-Carroll, said it’s a miracle the dog is alive.
“When we found him, we honestly thought he was deceased,” Thompson-Carroll told The Huffington Post. “He wasn’t moving and his temperature wouldn’t register. We were shocked when we discovered he was still breathing.”
The organization estimates the pup is anywhere between 6 and 8 months old. It found out about the dog after someone doing maintenance at the residence noticed a dog kennel covered with a blanket.
“When he looked inside, he saw this dog and took a video of it, which he then brought to us.”
The dog was confiscated by animal cruelty officers and immediately taken to a shelter for emergency treatment.
“He is all bone-weight,” Thompson-Carroll said. “He has a lot of sores from lying in his own feces and his feet are pretty severely burned from the urine. Typically, in cases like this, their organs will shut down. It’s amazing his didn’t.”
The vet started an IV drip to rehydrate the puppy and worked to raise his body temperature. Somehow, the pup managed to survive the first night of treatment and is reportedly getting stronger every day.
“It’s a miracle,” Thompson-Carroll said of the pup’s recovery. “He’s doing much better now. He has a hard time walking, but he’s figuring things out.
“We don’t think he’s ever actually been out of the crate he was found in," she added.
The pup is being called Little Man, for now. He is temporarily staying with a shelter employee and will be up for adoption once he has fully recovered.
“It’s a term of endearment,” said Thompson-Carroll. “We want to see what his personality is like — which probably won’t come out for a week or two — before we give him a permanent name.”
