Law enforcement officials have identified Aaron Alexis as the primary suspect in the shootings that occurred in the Washington Navy Yard this morning.
Alexis, a 34 year old man who recently relocated to Washington from Fort Worth, Texas, was one of the 12 people found dead at the scene.
Officials reported that Alexis was armed with multiple weapons, reportedly including an AR-15, a shotgun and a handgun. After a rampage in the Navy Yard that resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people, Alexis engaged in firefight with police forces. He was ultimately killed by an officer.
Information as to Alexis’ background is still coming in. Many news outlets have been reporting that he had recently begun working at the Navy Yard as a civilian contractor. The Washington Post now reports that Alexis “appears to have served in the Navy, but it is unclear whether he was still on active duty.”
Local and federal law enforcement officers are investigating whether or not Alexis used the ID of Navy petty officer Rollie Chance to gain access to the Navy Yard. Chance’s relatives have claimed that Chance was not at the Navy Yard and therefore should not be considered a witness or a suspect.
Although Alexis had no history of crime in the D.C. area, he was arrested in Fort Worth in 2010 for discharging a gun within city limits. He had previously lived in Seattle and Brooklyn, according to The Washington Post.
Reports from Washington indicated that two other gunmen may still be at large, but one suspect has since been cleared. Officials are still investigating another possible suspect, claimed to be a 40-year old black male dressed in green military-style gear.
Alexis’s motive for the shooting is still unclear, but victims included both civilians and military personnel, as well as two police officers. According to The Inquisitr, the Department of Homeland Security claimed the attack “does not appear to be an act of terrorism.” More information about the shooter and his motives will be revealed as the investigation continues to unfold.
