82-Year-Old Driver Killed In Collision With Lamborghini

An 82-year-old man was killed Sept. 21 following a collision between his vehicle and a Lamborghini, which police said was speeding.

The incident occurred in Delray Beach, Florida, and police spokeswoman Dani Moschella said she suspected alcohol was involved, the Sun Sentinel reported.

The 82-year-old victim was identified Sept. 22 as J. Gerald Smith, who was an Uber driver.

Smith’s wife said he usually came home around dinner time and she had a meal waiting for him when she learned that he had died.

“It's heartbreaking,” Moschella added, according to the Sentinel. “He was 82 years old, trying to make a little extra money driving an Uber.”

Police identified the Lamborghini driver as Roger Wittenberns. The 60-year-old said he had been eating and drinking in the downtown area with his girlfriend, 61-year-old Patty McQuiggin, during the afternoon before the crash. Both then left in separate vehicles.

Wittenberns is still in hospital in a serious condition.

The road on which Wittenberns’ Lamborghini and McQuiggin’s Porsche were traveling immediately prior to the crash has a speed limit of 35 miles per hour. But according to Moschella, “They’re traveling at a very high rate of speed.”

An officer performed CPR on Smith, but he later died in hospital.

McQuiggin fled the scene after parking her car at a nearby restaurant. Police spoke to her at her home but she has refused to provide a statement to investigators. Surveillance camera footage of the crash is also being reviewed.

Local residents were not surprised by the crash. Glyn Moulton said he frequently saw cars reaching speeds of 70 to 80 miles per hour along the road.

“We've been yelling for years, put a light there. It's really simple,” Moulton added. “They put up red lights everywhere when they were doing to beautification project of Delray, but they didn't put one up there.”

Both Wittenberns and McQuiggin have previous DUI arrests on their records, according to WPEC. Wittenberns has already reportedly hired a defense attorney.
