An 8-year-old Florida boy was taken into custody after he reportedly stole his mother's gun and attempted to rob a grocery store.
The incident occurred in West Palm Beach, Florida, and was captured on security footage. The boy was seen walking into the store wearing baggy clothing and a bike helmet and proceeded to walk down an aisle before going to a checkout register.
An employee said when the boy approached the register, he pulled out the gun and demanded money.
"At the moment I didn’t know if it was a real gun or fake but I took it seriously," employee Robert Espinal said.
Another employee, who declined to give his name, said he stepped in to stop the boy from going any further.
"As soon as I moved I reached over to him, twisted his wrist, took the gun away," the employee said. A store manager subsequently called police.
Although the gun was loaded, an employee of the store told WPBF there was no bullet in the chamber.
The boy's mother, Eboni Alls, thought her son was going to the park to play. It was when it came time to pick him up that she noticed something wasn't right.
"When I grabbed my purse, it was so light. I’m like I knew I was missing something. I said, 'Where’s my gun?'" Alls said.
No charges were filed against Alls or her son, though the boy cannot visit the grocery store, has been released from home detention and will be required to enter a diversion program.
Alls said that if there was anything she would have done differently to prevent the incident, she "would have had the gun locked up in a safe somewhere."
