Joseph Lyssikatos, 12, was recently suspended from the Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School because of a toy gun keychain, which is less than two inches long.
After the tiny toy dropped out of Lyssikatos’ backpack, another student found it and started showing it around last Thursday (video below).
Eventually, the toy keychain was confiscated by a worried teacher and given to school administrators who suspended Lyssikatos from the Coventry, R.I., school.
“This [other] boy was the one waving it or showing it to other kids, not Joseph,” Joseph’s mother, Bonnie Bonanno, told NBC 10. “Joseph wasn’t doing that, so why weren’t both of them reprimanded?”
School officials refused to speak to the press “because this is a student discipline issue and we cannot comment on any specifics.”
However, school officials are also refusing to speak to Lyssikatos’ family.
In addition to being suspended from school for three days, Joseph was also been banned from a class field trip to Salem, Mass., at the end of the month.
“I'm missing the NECAP testing and I’m in advanced math so I’m going to have to re-do all the homework I’m going to miss for advanced math,” said the middle-schooler.
