Tragedy almost struck on Sunday when a 7-year-old boy was shot in the buttock as he rode his bicycle down a sidewalk in Boston.
The boy, Divan Silva, had been riding his bike to a corner store to purchase water on Sunday when gunshots rang out throughout the street.
Surveillance video footage (shown below) shows Divan riding his bike before collapsing on the sidewalk and grasping at his wound.
“It was very emotional to see my son like that,” said the boy’s mother, Dijanira DeAndrade, 28, to the Boston Glove in a telephone interview. “I thought I was going to lose my son.”
After hearing the gunfire, the mother reportedly ran to find her son. In the video, she can be seen running up and holding her son as she cries out.
“He knew he was bleeding,” DeAndrade said. “He was touching the blood. I kept telling him to stay awake, not to close his eyes. He stayed awake the whole time … He stayed really strong for me.”
In the video, Divan can be seen holding his hand on the wound on his left buttock.
The boy had reportedly been visiting his grandmother at the time of the shooting. According to DeAndrade, she had been in her mother’s apartment when the shots rang out. She asked her boyfriend where her son was and he reportedly informed her that he left for the corner store. According to the surveillance video time stamp, she found her son less than a minute later.
"That’s when me and mom ran and found him there,” DeAndrade explained to the Boston Globe.
“He was very brave. He wasn’t crying until the police came,” she continued, “... He was very afraid of all the people around him. He couldn’t move. I was holding him. He was just looking at me, and I was talking to him.”
Authorities arrived on the scene and Divan was taken to the Boston’s Children’s Hospital and went through surgery on Sunday. He was listed as being in good condition on Tuesday and, according to his mother, has been able to take a few steps with help.
“He’s doing great,” she said. “He’s a very strong boy.”
Police Commissioner William B. Evans has even visited Divan in the hospital, promising that the police would find the shooter responsible.
“I apologized that something like this would happen,” the commissioner told the Boston Globe. “It’s sort of sad that I’m having this conversation with a 7-year-old boy and his mother.”
Both the mother and the police commissioner have made statements imploring the public to help find the ones responsible for shooting Divan.
“We need everyone to come forward with every little bit of information they have,” Evans said. “Don’t hold it to yourself. It does no one any good to stand by and allow a 7-year-old to be shot.”
Law enforcement officials are on the lookout for a heavy set 14- to 18-year-old male with a red hoodie, white shorts, and white sneakers, according to the Boston Globe.
A 20-year-old man was also wounded in the incident. His head was grazed by a bullet.
