A 66-year-old male seeking treatment for swelling in his abdomen got some pretty interesting news from his doctor’s office. What was the interesting news? Nothing big. Just that he was a woman.
Yes, the doctors told him he was actually a woman.
The Chinese man, who was an orphan growing up, apparently was suffering from a swollen cyst on his ovary and not from any medical issues related to his abdomen.
According to a report from the South China Morning Post, the 66-year-old suffers from two very rare genetic disorders that led to his condition.
One, Turner’s syndrome, causes women to lack several female features while the other, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, boosts male hormones and makes women look like men.
"The patient, by definition, is a woman who cannot get pregnant. But she also has CAH, which gave her the appearance of a man," Chinese University paediatrics professor Ellis Hon Kam-lun said. "It's an interesting and very rare case of having the two combinations. It probably won't be seen again in the near future."
The case was reported by doctors from Kwong Wah Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, who treated the patient. It was published in the Hong Kong Medical Journal on Monday.
The South China Morning Post reported that the 66-year-old has a beard, a small penis, no testes, and stands just 4’5” tall. He has stated he will continue to perceive himself as a man.
Only six cases of a patient with both conditions have been reported in medical literature. This patient was diagnosed later in life than any of the others.
