65-Year-Old Woman Kills Own Son During Fight

A 65-year-old mother from South Carolina has been charged for murdering her 30-year-old son.

The community of Kingstree is reeling from the tragedy, especially due to the nature of the crime: it isn't often that an elderly woman commits murder.

Phyllis E. Owens fatally shot George Goethe Mixon III with a 20-gauge shotgun after the pair got into a fiery spat on Jan. 30, according to the Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office via Inquisitr.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Mixon lying on the living room floor with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to WMBF News.

Mixon died while riding in the ambulance on route to the hospital, according to Inquisitr.

News of the killing is going viral on social media and many of the locals have indicated that George Goethe Mixon III had a history of drug abuse and bursts of violence.

Mixon’s former fiancee, Macy Alexandra Welch, wrote a post about the tragedy on Facebook:

“He was on drugs years ago… he would beat the living hell outta her (Owens). Yet, she still stood by him (until) he got clean. She was there every step of the way. I was engaged to this pyscho. I left because we got into an argument and he pulled a gun on me 4 years ago… He was mentally unstable, she knew that. [Phyllis] has stage 4 cancer and doesn’t need to be in prison for defending herself.”

Family member Crystal McCutcheon Freeman alleges that Mixon may have suffered from mental illness. She wrote on Facebook that Owens “gave up her life her marriage her job to take care of her grown but also mentally ill son.”

Freeman also hinted that the shooting may have been unintentional, though she did not deliver any details.

What exactly happened on Jan. 30 is still unclear at the moment, as is the motive for Owens killing her son.

Owens is currently being detained at the Williamsburg County Detention Center without bond. She is being indicted for murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
