A 61-year-old resident of Dundalk in Baltimore has been left facing hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills after a brutal beating by a gang of teens. The incident has thus far led to two criminal charges, including one for attempted murder.
Richard Fletcher went outside when he saw two girls fighting on his truck.
“He wasn’t trying to intervene in their disagreement,” Cpl. John Wachter of the Baltimore County Police Department told CBS Baltimore. "He just wanted them to stop fighting and move away from his car."
The assault that followed left Fletcher with broken eye sockets, a broken nose, broken ribs, and a brain bleed. The attack involved about 50 teens, according to a GoFundMe page created by the Harbor View Neighborhood Association.
Investigations are still on-going, but police have already charged two participants. Antoine Lawson, 17, has been charged as an adult with attempted murder, while a 15-year-old girl has been handed assault charges.
Police are trying to identify other people involved in the incident, including by using cellphone video footage of the beating.
“It has gotten out of hand now, gone too far,” local businessman Joe Lamb told WBAL. “The kids walk on top of cars, kick dogs, let dogs out, throw trash, steal milk from school and throw it at houses, threaten neighbors with bodily harm.”
Local residents claim the attackers were students at Baltimore Community High School.
“The community in all, we’re really disgusted with the actions of the students,” Georgia Bartrum of the Harbor View Neighborhood Association told CBS Baltimore.
The association is helping Fletcher by organizing a fundraising campaign to assist with his medical bills, which could amount to $400,000. To date, over $8,000 has been raised through a GoFundMe, the Daily Mail reported.
“He’s got a lot of doctors visits,” Bartrum said. “So he’s going to have a long road to recovery.”
“We are working closely with the family to assist them during this difficult time,” the association wrote on the GoFundMe page. “We estimate his medical bills will be between $200,000-$400,000. His medical insurance will not pay for all of the bills. At this time, he is out of the hospital but he will need several additional surgeries.”
