A 6-year-old girl in Arkansas used her sleeping mother's thumbprint to order $250 in toys on Amazon.
Bethany Howell, from Little Rock, Arkansas, said that she was watching a movie with her daughter, Ashlynd, 6, when Bethany fell asleep a few minutes into the movie, BuzzFeed reports.
"Probably about four or five minutes into the movie, I fell asleep unintentionally," said Bethany. "And that’s when she got on my phone."
Bethany said that, at the time, she didn't realize that Ashlynd had gotten hold of her phone. The Amazon app on her phone was set to allow orders without a password, Newser reports, which led to Ashlynd's shopping spree, in which she spent $250 on Pokemon merchandise and toys.
Bethany said she only realized later what had happened, after her husband said that he noticed that she had spent the money on Amazon.
"I said, 'What are you talking about? I didn't purchase anything,'" said Bethany. "We thought we’d been hacked at first."
When the couple checked the orders on the app, they noticed that all of the items purchased were Pokemon toys, which Bethany said Ashlynd loves.
"From there, I was like, 'Well if you didn’t shop, and I didn't shop, there's only one other person in the house that could have done this,'" Bethany recalled.
When her mother asked her about the shopping spree, Ashlynd quickly admitted to the purchases.
"She said, 'Yeah mommy! I was shopping. But don't worry, all of it is going to come straight to the house,'" said Bethany. "Then I asked her, 'How'd you get into my phone? Did you remember my code?' And she said, 'No, I used your thumb.'"
Bethany said that Ashlynd didn't understand how money worked, or how much the toys had cost, so she explained it to her that night, telling her that the next time she wants something "she has to ask and she also has to earn it."
Only four of the items were able to be returned -- but luckily, Bethany had yet to do her Christmas shopping for the year.
"So, on Christmas morning she was opening things, saying, 'This is what Santa brought me! I ordered it and he brought it to me!'"
