6-Year-Old Michigan Boy Takes Family Car For A Spin

A 6-year-old Michigan boy made it about three miles cruising behind the wheel of his family’s car on Saturday morning. He was finally stopped after two other motorists noticed his understandably erratic driving and called 911.

“I opened the door and asked him what he was doing,” Lapeer County Sheriff deputy Karl Sapp recalled. “He told me he was going to the dealer to get the car fixed.”

The youngster didn’t do any major damage while driving the car, but he did hit a street sign and crack the vehicle’s bumper. He initially blamed the damage to the car on his dad, The Detroit Free Press reported.

The boy’s parents were asleep when he took the Ford Taurus station out for a spin. In addition to heading to the repair shop, the boy also was trying to navigate his way to the Chinese food restaurant that his family had dined at on Friday night.

"He had never driven before,” Sapp said. “Nobody taught him. I don’t know how he was able to operate everything and see at the same time. Apparently he was close enough that he could reach the pedals and accelerate and brake too.”

After officers stopped the boy, his father was called to the scene to drive the car home.
