A 6-month-old puppy was found alive under a pile of rubble more than a week after a tornado tore through the central Illinois town of Washington.
Jacob Montgomery, a member of the Illinois National Guard, was separated from his dog Dexter of Nov. 17 when the tornado damaged his third floor apartment.
A neighbor sent Montgomery a Facebook message nine days later to tell him Dexter was found beneath rumble where the apartment used to be, according to a spokesman for the National Guard.
Dexter had to be coaxed out of the debris with hot dog by animal rescue workers.
While he was malnourished, a veterinarian at Teegarden Veterinary Clinic found no major injuries.
He is expected to make a full recovery.
Montgomery said when they were reunited “his tail started going.”
