Two more serious Pit Bull attacks have brought the total to five in New Mexico for May 2012.
On May 24, a Las Cruces man was taking his daily walk with his old Border Collie mix when his dog was attacked by two pit bulls near Dalrymple Road and Trojan Loop, according to a KVIA News report.
Bill Boling, 63, told reporters that he takes the same stroll each morning, and he was just a few yards from his house on Wednesday when he saw two Pit Bulls headed straight for him and his dog. Boling told ABC-7 he tried to stop them by throwing a rock, but the Pit Bulls grabbed Carley, his elderly Border Collie Mix and dragged her down in a ditch along with Boling would not let go of Carley’s leash
"About halfway down I thought, I better do something because we're in trouble," Boling said.
Luckily, he had a 3-inch pocketknife with him, "One dog had my dog by the throat and the other dog had her by the heels, trying to rip her stomach or whatever they do. The dog that had her by the throat, every time I'd stab it he'd let up a little bit, but I could never get a good shot at the jugular or anything like that. (I) stabbed it, stabbed it. My dog was screaming, poor thing," Boling told ABC7 News.
His neighbor saw the gruesome struggle from his backyard and said, “"It was pretty terrifying.”
Boling said he believes he stabbed the pit bulls about 60 or 70 times before they finally backed off. He said he asked his neighbor to take care of his dog. “I came back to my house and I got a pistol and I shot one of the dogs," Boling said.
Mr. Boling said the only positive thing about this attack is it could finally make people pay attention to the potential dangers from some Pit Bulls. "I hope we can use this and let the powers that be realize that we've got a problem out here. Those dogs could've just as easily pulled a 60-, 70-pound child down there in that ditch and killed (him or her)," Boling said.
Boling said he's grateful his dog, Carley, survived. "That dog's a good friend of mine. Thank God she's going to make it through this," Boling said.
The Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department said the Pit Bulls had microchips and their shots are current. The owner was identified as Chris Sanchez, 26, who surrendered the dogs for euthanasia, KVIA reported.
Deputies said Sanchez surrendered custody of the dogs and both have been euthanized.
Sanchez is charged with four misdemeanors, two counts of failure to restrain an animal and two counts of having a vicious and/or dangerous animal.
Carley, the Border Collie, is recovering from injuries all over her body.
The Sheriff’s department forDoña Ana County, which serves Las Cruces, issued a statement on May 25, 2012, that deputies will be seriously enforcing an existing statute outlining strict regulations for owners of vicious dogs, according to a KTSM News report.
However, Deputy Robyn Gojkovich, an investigator with the sheriff’s Animal Cruelty Task Force, made it clear, “This is not an issue about pit bulls,” said “And it’s not targeted at the various breeds of potentially dangerous dogs, either. This is about public safety, and it starts with holding owners legally responsible for their dogs.”
Owners in violation of the requirements will be charged with a misdemeanor offense. The ordinance requires the owners of any breed of dog that is deemed potentially dangerous to have a permit. In order to receive a permit, owners must meet several requirements, including a current rabies vaccination and microchip, a proper enclosure for the dog and the owner must demonstrate they are able to keep the dog under control at all times.
Any owner of a dangerous or potentially dangerous dog that causes injury or death of a human being, without provocation, is subject to being charged with a third-degree felony.
