William Simmons and his girlfriend Melisa Mumpower were arrested on Tuesday after Simmons' 3-year-old daughter was shot by another 3 year old with a .22-caliber rifle that was left in a playroom.
The bullet hit the young girl's arm and then traveled into her abdomen, say Randolph County Deputies.
The Asheboro, N. C. parents (pictured) have been charged with three counts of misdemeanor child abuse, one count of felony child abuse and one count of failure to properly store a firearm to protect a minor. The child abuse charge is related to the unsafe living conditions in the home.
According to WXII 12, deputies say Mumpower was in the home and cleaning at the time of the shooting.
The injured girl was taken to the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and had surgery. The parents were arrested at the hospital.
Two more toddlers were in the home at the time of the shooting, but are now in the custody of Randolph County Social Services, notes My Fox 8.
Simmons was being held on $35,500 bond, but posted bail. However, Mumpower is still being held on a $6,300 bond.
