Tmorej Smith, 3, was killed last Friday in Greenville, South Carolina, while playing with a pink handgun, which he thought was a toy.
Police who responded said that Smith was found with a gunshot wound to the head, reports WYFF-TV.
It is known that Tmorej and his 7-year-old sister were playing with the pink handgun when this tragic incident occurred, but it's not clear who fired the gun.
Deputy Coroner Jeff Fowler said the shooting happened in a bedroom, while the boy’s grandparents were in the living room. The boy's parents were not at home.
“If you have guns, if you own guns mostly we would prefer you have them in a lock box,” Greenville Police Media Relations Officer Jonathan Bragg told WYFF-TV. “At least have them out of the reach of children.”
Gun control advocates claim that pink handguns and Hello Kitty assault rifles have been part of an effort to get guns into the hands of women and kids in recent years, as seen on Discovery’s reality series 'American Guns' (video below).
