A 20-month-old baby girl was mauled to death by her aunt’s three pit bulls in an apartment at 127 Leete Street in West Haven on Friday evening, September 30. She has been identified as Nevaeh Bryant of Derby, Connecticut, according to the Associated Press.
Lt. Robert Proto of West Haven Police said the child had been lying on a blanket on the floor in the living room and the dogs were shut in another room. Somehow they broke out and attacked her. The police reported that the toddler was bleeding profusely and was unconscious when officers and paramedics arrived at the third-floor apartment shortly after 6:00 p.m.
Neveh was pronounced dead at Yale-New Haven Hospital, according to the Hartford Courant. http://www.courant.com/community/west-haven/hc-west-haven-pitulls-1001-20110930,0,5772768.story
"We believe all three dogs were involved in the attack, but they have to have (a) necropsy done to determine that as part of the investigation," a police official stated. It has not yet been determined whether the girl was alone when the attack took place, Reuters reports.
The New Haven Register was told by the girl's aunt that the pit bulls had never been aggressive, but the Register reports that a source familiar with the case said neighbors have told police the dogs have shown aggression before.
Police officers had to use catch poles to remove the pit bulls from the home and taser guns in order to subdue the three dogs enough to remove them from the building, reports dogbites.com. Sgt. Angelo Moscato said that officers did a "professional job in capturing the three aggressive dogs." http://blog.dogsbite.org/2011/09/2011-dog-bite-fatality-pit-bulls-kill.html
All three pit bulls were euthanized because of the severity of the attack.
An on-going investigation would determine if charges should be filed, police officials had reported on Monday. However, on Tuesday morning, October 4, CT.com posted that the state medical examiner's office ruled Monday the mauling of the little girl was an accident.
“According to WTNH, the aunt, Erica Hobdy, of Leete Street, had apparently locked the pit bulls in her son's room when she left for the store before 6 p.m. But the dogs got out and attacked Bryant, who was asleep on a mattress in another room,” the report states. http://www.ctpost.com/policereports/article/Pit-bulls-killing-of-Derby-toddler-an-accident-2201055.php#ixzz1Zp2Wtklq
