Mia Khalifa, 21, was just voted the No. 1 porn star in the world, and people in her home country of Lebanon took to social media to express their outrage.
Khalifa, who was born in Lebanon but moved to the U.S. as a teenager, was given the accolade by porn site PornHub after she became the most searched star on the Internet.
“I am a Palestinian patriot and what you are doing is shameful,” one critic said. “ur head will be cut soon inshallah,” another wrote.
The Lebanese Examiner also responded to the controversy, saying that Lebanese people were “upset and offended by her work, especially because she often boasts her Lebanese heritage on Twitter and Instagram, posting photographs of her Arabic tattoo that reads ‘Koullouna lil-watan, lil’oula lil-‘alam,’" which is the opening line of the Lebanese national anthem.
Khalifa responded to the criticism on Twitter, saying that she had a right to get the tattoo. “I was born and raised there, I’m entitled to an opinion on the politics just like everyone else,” she said.
“Doesn’t the Middle East have more important things to worry about besides me?” Khalifa asked in another tweet. “How about finding a president? Or containing ISIS?”
One particular video that has sparked backlash throughout the Middle East shows Khalifa wearing a hijab, the traditional Muslim headscarf, while performing sex acts. “Mia Khalifa is neat and all but wearing hijabs in her porn vids is really problematic and gross,” one Twitter user said.
Khalifa reportedly resides in Miami, but is believed to have family still living in Lebanon.
