The latest incident in the continued decline of the once-prestigious Mall of America: a former mayoral candidate was brutally beaten the day after Christmas after he attempted to chase down a teenager who stole his iPhone.
The former candidate is 63 year old Mark Andrew. Andrew was sitting at the Mall of America Starbucks when a teen stole his phone. Andrew ran after the thief, but he was soon tackled and beaten by two teenage girls working with the thief.
The girls beat Andrew with a billy club and reportedly told Andrew “we’re going to kill you.” Andrew was taken to the local hospital where he was treated for minor wounds and given nine stitches. Both girls who beat him are the custody of police. The male thief remains at large.
“If somebody is gonna do that to me or somebody else, I’m not a bystander by nature I’ll go in and fight,”Andrew said. “I was targeted because the phone was out and I’m 63 years old, and I’m sure they thought that I was easy pickins.”
The two female suspects are being hit with felony charges of aiding and abetting an aggravated robbery. Though the male suspect was not stopped, shoppers managed to find Andrew’s phone in the mall.
Earlier this year, Andrew came in second place in the 2013 Minneapolis mayoral race. He received 31% of the vote.
