A young girl has died after she reportedly found a loaded weapon and accidentally shot herself at a home in Fayetteville, N.C.
Police said officers responded to the home early Saturday afternoon where they found a 2-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound, according to WNCN.
Investigators said the girl was not breathing when they first responded and that the victim was transported immediately to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. She was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to authorities.
“The child sustained the injuries due to an unsecured handgun in the residence,” said Cpt. Charles Hunter of the Fayetteville Police Department. “We have obtained that handgun.”
WRAL reports that detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department’s Homicide Unit were at the home Saturday afternoon investigating the incident.
Police say the girl was home with her aunt and grandmother at the time of the shooting and that no one else inside the home was injured.
“There are so many unanswered questions right now running through my mind,” neighbor Byron Brown said. “You know, to lose a 2-year-old, to lose anybody, but to lose a 2-year-old baby who hasn't even lived yet. This is horrific.”
Currently no charges have been filed, but the police say as the investigation continues, that will most likely change.
“The weapons were unsecured in a location where the child could have found it,” Hunter said.
