2-Year-Old Girl Dies After Being Left In Hot Van, Virginia Police Say

A 2-year-old girl was found unresponsive in her car seat in a hot van in Roanoke, Virginia, Sunday afternoon.

Police spokesman Scott Leamon said it appeared that the toddler was "accidentally left in the closed van by a parent for an extended period of time” while temperatures outside reached 90 degrees.

Her parents began a frantic search for her at 4 p.m. Sunday.

They were shocked to find the toddler in their van parked in the driveway.

Her mother attempted to perform CPR in their front yard. Emergency responders arrived shortly thereafter, but the child was declared dead at the scene at 4:27 p.m.

No charges have been filed in the case.

A police investigation is ongoing, the Roanoke Times reported.

Monday night about 50 people gathered at a prayer vigil outside the family’s home.

“This was an accident,” William Zimmerman told the crowd. “I know the love that comes from this family. This is a blow to the heart.”
