A 2-year-old Kansas City, Missouri boy has died of injuries police believe were the result of abuse, officials said Sunday.
The Kansas City Star reports the boy’s death is believed to be the first homicide in the city this year.
The toddler — who has only been identified by his first name, Lorenzo — was rushed to a nearby hospital from his home in the city on Friday morning. Police officials said the child, who had been on life support, died Saturday night.
Police are said to have arrived at the home early Friday morning where they found paramedics working on the boy. It is unclear who called emergency personnel to the home where 23-year-old Mirsad Hamidovic was caring for the child while the toddler’s mother was at work. Hamidovic is reportedly Lorenzo’s mother’s boyfriend.
Medical personnel told police the boy had head and brain injuries and suffered from a lacerated liver, according to a WDAF News report.
Officials questioned Hamidovic who is said to have confessed to abusing the boy. The mother is believed to have been at work during the time the child was allegedly abused.
Court documents, obtained by KCTV News, recount some of what the suspect is said to have told police.
“The suspect jumped up in the air and came down on the victim's chest and the victim's head may have hit the window sill,” the documents read. “The suspect said the victim was on his back on the ground when the suspect jumped off the bed up in the air and came down on the victim's chest with his forearms in front of him. He did this twice. The suspect stated the victim was coughing up blood and he cleaned the blood off the victim's mouth in a panic.”
Medical personnel said the boy’s injuries were consistent with the alleged abuse.
Hamidovic has been charged with two counts of child abuse and two counts of domestic assault in the first degree, all felonies.
As of Sunday afternoon, no new charges in connection with the boy’s death had been reported.
Hamidovic is being held on $500,000 bond.
