2 Santa Cruz Police Officers Killed, Suspect Jeremy Goulet Dead

Two Santa Cruz police detectives were shot and killed on Tuesday while attempting to question a man about a sexual assault report.

Sgt. Loren Butch Baker, a 28-year veteran of the force, and Detective Elizabeth Butler, a 10-year veteran, were fired upon at the home of barista Jeremy Goulet, 35, while responding to a report that Goulet made inappropriate sexual advances to a coworker at her home. Backup responded to the officers’ call about 30 minutes later, and Goulet was killed in the gunfire that followed.

"There aren't words to describe this horrific tragedy," said Santa Cruz Police Chief Kevin Vogel. "This is the darkest day in the history of the Santa Cruz police department."

The usually quiet community of Santa Cruz was rocked with terror. The shooting resulted in a lockdown of two schools and an automatic police call to nearby residents warning them to lock themselves inside their homes. Afterwards, police went door to door, checking garages, searching homes, including closets, to see if there were any other potential suspects who may have played a part in the crime.

In May 2008 Goulet was convicted in Portland, Oregon, of peeping on a 22-year-old woman who was showering in her condominium and for carrying a concealed weapon. He was on probation, but was sentenced to two years in jail after an altercation with his probation officer.

"This is an exceptionally shocking and sad day for Santa Cruz and our police department," said Mayor Hilary Bryant. The statement she released said Santa Cruz was "heartbroken at the loss of two of our finest police officers who were killed in the line of duty, protecting the community we love."

Santa Cruz has recently experienced a spike in assaults, which was going to be addressed by city leaders at a rally on Tuesday. However that rally and city council meeting were cancelled after the tragedy. Recent violent incidents in the city include the fatal shooting of 32-year-old martial arts instructor outside of a popular downtown bar and restaurant, a University of California student shot in the head after being robbed, a 21-year-old student raped and beaten on the UC campus, and a couple who fought of two men during a home invasion.
