In 1st Ever Ranking, 6 U.S. Airlines Among World's Safest

In the first-ever ranking of its kind, six U.S. airlines placed among the "Top 10 Safest Airlines" in the world.

The Air Transport Rating Agency (ATRA) named the top ten without ranking them. Among U.S. airlines, American, Continental, Delta, Southwest, United and US Airways made the list.

Air France-KLM, British Airways, Lufthansa and Japan Airlines were also on the list.

The news agency AFP reports that ATRA used 15 different criteria to come up with its list, such as the average age of an airline's aircraft to the "homogeneity of the fleet."

Accident figures were certainly part of it but ATRA said it also considered "technical, human, organizational and external" elements.
