A Texas girl was found burned to death from playing in the oven after her mother left her and her other children alone.
KPRC reports that 19-month-old J'zyra Thompson and her two siblings, 5 and 4 years old, were home alone when authorities arrived to their home in the early morning of Nov. 17 to find her dead.
The children were left alone at some point during the night, and had started to play with the oven.
Emergency crews arrived at the family's apartment after midnight, but they were unable to save young J'zyra.
"Upon their arrival they found a deceased 1-year-old," HPD homicide detective Ronda Pemberton said.
"We found the baby next to the oven. It appears to be accidental."
Homicide detectives with the Houston Police Department believe the mother was at work and had left her boyfriend to care for her three children.
"She was a sweet baby," Gina Dennis, the child's grandmother, said.
"This is unexplainable. I have no words."
The children's mother and her boyfriend were taken into police custody for questioning, but it is unclear as to whether any charges will be filed.
According to the organization Prevention Works, nearly 4.5 million children ages 14 and under are injured at home. The majority of unintentional injury-related deaths among children occur during the evening when they are left unsupervised.
