An 18-year old Ohio man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the 2013 murder of a young woman he called a "friend."

Adrian McGee was convicted on Tuesday of killing 18-year-old Danielle Michaels at a school campus after McGee had given Michaels a ride. According to the Newark Advocate, McGee and Michaels ended up in the woods next to a baseball field where it is believed he sexually assaulted her and stripped her clothes off, before proceeding to stab her in the neck.

Michaels reportedly attempted to escape, at which point McGee is said to have choked her and then stabbed her again a number of times. Her body was found two days later, and a knife with Michaels' blood on it was found in McGee's apartment.

McGee, who was originally charged as a juvenile because he was 17 at the time of the murder, was found guilty of murder, aggravated murder, kidnapping and tampering with evidence. He was ultimately tried as an adult when the case was transferred to Common Pleas court.

Michaels' family addressed her killer, and read statements that described her as "bubbly" and a generous friend. "She was killed in a way adjectives can't even define," the teen's grandfather read from a statement written by her cousin. "A man with such a lack of morals shouldn't be a part of society."

"We don't want to know every detail. What we do know haunts us," Danielle's grandmother said to McGee. "The havoc you perpetuated will echo for eons."

McGee, who reportedly remained relatively emotionless while his victim's family members spoke, addressed them directly in court, saying he was "truly sorry" for what happened.

"I want to apologize to her family for their loss and apologize to my family that I won't be there for years to come," he said.

Adrian McGee will be eligible to apply for parole in 2038.
