Misty “Ariel” Kornegay, a 15-year-old girl from Florida, allegedly shot and killed her brother Damien on Monday night. Authorities were notified of a shooting at about 9:30 p.m. and found the 16-year-old boy dead at the scene. Kornegay is being charged with premeditated murder.
Kornegay reportedly admitted to police that she retrieved a handgun from her parents’ room and shot her brother while her parents were away. She then left the scene of the crime with her 11-year-old sister, Nicole. The girls left their 3-year-old sister alone in the house.
Both the 15-year-old and 11-year-old are accused of "plotting" their brother's death, reports First Coast News.
Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter said, “Anytime you come on scene with something this horrific, which you have juveniles or children involved, it's pretty unsettling, even to seasoned law enforcement and deputies.”
Kornegay’s parents, Keith and Misty Kornegay, were arrested the day after the murder and are being charged with child neglect. They have been accused of failing to properly supervise their children. Nicole Kornegay is also being charged with murder.
The family’s youngest child is currently in the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
This was the first reported murder in Columbia County in over a year.
