14-Year-Old Suspended for Pretending His Hand was a Gun

A 14-year-old boy in Marysville, Wash., was suspended after he walked around the hallway pretending to shoot his friends with his hands.

Hunter Lance was suspended from Marysville Middle School for nine days. His mother, Rondi Lance, did not deny that he should not have used his hands as mock guns, but she told KOMO-TV that the punishment did not fit the crime.

"I think it was just 'bang', 'bang' with your hand, or maybe a machine gun with your arm," she said. "I am not questioning the suspension or the discipline actions. Definitely they should've done what they did, but I think it's really extreme."

She added: "You don't get to clean out your locker, you don't get to finalize your grades. It's like, 'Get your stuff, you're done for the year.' Nobody has taken any steps to talk to him and explain to him how serious this is and why we have to do this."

According to assistant school superintendent, Gail Miller, there was more to the May 31 incident than what Rondi Lance described.

"The one student was walking down the hall pretending to shoot at students and saying what his 'kill count' was," Miller told KOMO-TV. "This is definitely inappropriate behavior and it frightened some children."

Miller said school officials disciplined Hunter because he has a long history of misbehaving.

"It doesn't make sense to me," his mother said. "How can they cut him off at the knees and be done with him?"

Hunter was not allowed to finish out the school year. He might have to attend summer school to make up his coursework.

Lance claims the incident was just child’s play.

"I understand totally that what he did is serious, and I understand that there's going to be discipline actions taken. I get that," she said. "My heart goes out to everyone who's been affected by a school shooting. He's learned a lesson. That's not going to happen again. I just — I want to put it behind us at this point. I'm tired of being frustrated and I want to move on."
