An 11-year-old girl from Wickliffe, Ohio, has been charged with murder for beating a 2-month-old girl to death.
Zuri Whitehead, the baby who was killed, was being babysat by the girl’s mother overnight when she was beaten to death.
ABC reported Wickliffe police Chief Randy Ice said at a news conference Feb. 9 that the suspect’s mother fell asleep with Zuri on the couch downstairs. The 11-year-old took the infant upstairs and an hour later she woke up her mother and gave her Zuri back. The infant was bleeding and her head was swollen.
Zuri suffered a traumatic brain injury. She was flown to Lake West Hospital then to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, where she died during surgery.
Trina Whitehead, Zuri's mother, was a friend of the 11-year-old’s mother. Whitehead has three other children, and asked her friend babysit for the night so she could have a break.
The girl cannot be tried as an adult, but she could be sentenced until the age of 21. The girl was not remorseful when confronted with her actions, Ice said. "I'm not sure she appreciated the gravity of what she did.”
The girl has been in trouble before - the middle school she attends once called the police for an incident she was involved in, although it was not violent.
Ice is considering offering counseling to the police officers who responded to the initial 911 call.
"We're having a hard time getting (our) heads around this," he said. "You don't see stuff like this."
