Lake Fork, the East Texas reservoir 65 miles east of Dallas, is well known for its big bass, and not much else.

However, a small convenience store in the area is generating its own buzz.

Star Mart, owned by Frank Hemani, a self proclaimed “people person,” is located on Farm Road 515 between the lake and Emory. The store mainly caters to locals and anglers looking for a record catch on Lake Fork.

The store is nondescript, with nothing out of the ordinary until you get to the sign on a refrigerator window near the milk.

The sign reads: “If you don’t have money or a job you can have a sandwich and a bottle of water for free.”

Frank stated that he saw people in the area struggling to get by and decided to try and help out. He stated that he gives out about 6 sandwiches on a weekly basis.

He added that he recently saw a woman with two kids in the backseat drive to the store. The kids were hungry and crying, but the woman had no money to buy food for the children.

Frank made them a pizza, and said of his kindness: “I have been blessed. I have never had to struggle.”

He stated that he got the idea when he watched a YouTube video in which a grocery store was making a similar offer. When he looked into it further, he found that “there are a lot of people out there that will help other people.”

He started paying it forward, and the sign has been up for about two months.

Frank stated that he has lived in the community for 10 years and “pretty much everybody knows everybody.”

He is the owner of three businesses in the area, including Minnow Bucket Marina near Quitman.

A Tennessee family is describing the astonishing survival of a 4-month-old boy after a powerful tornado destroyed his family’s mobile home, swept him away in a bassinet and left him stranded in a fallen tree.

Sydney Moore, 22, was inside her Clarksville home Saturday evening with her two sons and boyfriend, Aramis Youngblood, 39, when the storm suddenly intensified.

Moore said she barely had time to react. As violent winds tore into the home, she grabbed her 1-year-old son, Princeton, and tried to shield him with her body.

Youngblood rushed toward baby Lord, who had been sleeping nearby. The tornado ripped the bassinet into the storm, carrying the infant away as debris and rain whipped through the area.

The mobile home’s walls soon collapsed. Youngblood attempted to reach his infant son but was himself lifted from the ground and thrown by the powerful winds.

After escaping the wreckage with Princeton, Moore realized Lord was missing.

Youngblood, despite suffering a dislocated shoulder, immediately began digging through debris and searching the surrounding area. After roughly 10 minutes, he found the baby about 30 feet from the family’s destroyed home.

Lord was alive and crying, lodged in a fallen tree.

The reunion came as emergency crews worked through widespread destruction. Moore recalled seeing Youngblood approach through heavy rain with their missing baby in his arms.

Lord had cuts to his face and later received treatment for an injury near his ear. Despite the frightening ordeal, responders determined that the infant was breathing and ultimately healthy.

The storm system devastated parts of Tennessee, with multiple tornadoes reported and at least six people killed. Hundreds of homes were destroyed, while thousands of residents were displaced.

Moore’s family was among those left without a home. Fallen trees crushed their vehicle and blocked emergency crews from immediately reaching them, forcing the family to walk more than a mile while searching for medical assistance.

A Clarksville firefighter who responded to the area recalled seeing the injured infant covered in mud and suffering facial cuts. An ambulance was nearby, allowing rescuers to quickly get Lord medical attention.

The family’s ordeal did not end with Lord’s rescue. Their possessions were largely destroyed, and they have temporarily moved into a hotel while relatives work to help them rebuild.

Fremont police were called to an apartment on San Pedro Drive shortly after noon Friday following reports of a shooting. Officers arriving at the residence discovered one of the teenage suspects with a gunshot injury.

The injured teen was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, but he later died, according to investigators.

Police said the shooting stemmed from an encounter that began when two teenage suspects allegedly entered the apartment by force and attacked people who were inside. The confrontation quickly escalated, eventually leading to a struggle over a firearm.

During the struggle, one of the residents managed to gain possession of a suspect’s gun, police said. The resident then fired the weapon, striking one of the teens.

The teen who was shot suffered critical injuries and ultimately succumbed at the hospital.

The second alleged intruder escaped from the apartment following the shooting. Investigators later found and identified the other teenager, authorities said, though additional details about that suspect’s status were not immediately released.

Two people who were inside the apartment were also injured during the incident. Police described their injuries as non-life-threatening.

Authorities have not released additional details about what led the teens to the residence or whether the suspects knew the occupants before the confrontation. The identities and ages of those involved have also not been fully disclosed.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation as detectives work to reconstruct the events inside the apartment and determine exactly how the confrontation unfolded.

Judge Michael Chitty denied the motion Saturday afternoon, and both sides issued statements following the decision. As the case moves forward, however, attention is now shifting toward the formal appellate process.

That distinction could prove significant. Unlike ordinary trial mistakes, certain structural errors can be serious enough to warrant an automatic reversal because they affect the basic framework of a proceeding.

The defense could also challenge matters involving an alleged “gentleman’s agreement” between the parties during the trial. Attorneys may contend that the agreement was not followed as expected and that the resulting circumstances negatively affected Anthony’s ability to present his defense.

A judge ordered protective oversight involving the Gallia County Department of Job and Family Services. The following month, the court determined that state intervention was necessary and classified the children as dependent under Ohio law.

The incident unfolded Friday afternoon in Covington, where officers were initially dispatched to a Walmart following a report of suspected shoplifting. By the time police arrived at the store, the suspect had already left the area.

Investigators said officers were able to locate the vehicle nearby as it entered a gas station.

Covington police detective Daniel Seals said an officer stopped the vehicle at a busy QuikTrip along Highway 142, close to Interstate 20. What happened next quickly turned the traffic stop into a frightening scene.

According to police, the driver suddenly accelerated instead of remaining at the location. The officer was reportedly forced to hold onto the vehicle as it sped away.

Video recorded by witnesses showed the vehicle leaving the gas station with the officer clinging to its side, according to authorities.

Seals said the officer held on as long as possible before being thrown from the vehicle when the driver made a turn onto Highway 142.

The incident prompted a significant emergency response, with numerous police and emergency vehicles converging on the area after the officer was injured.

Paramedics transported the officer to Grady Memorial Hospital for medical evaluation. Authorities said the officer was in stable condition and suffered bumps and bruises, although doctors were conducting additional tests to determine whether there were more serious injuries.

The officer’s name has not been released.

Following the dramatic escape, law enforcement agencies launched a coordinated search for the suspect. Covington police were joined by deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Georgia State Patrol as investigators worked to locate the fleeing driver.

Diabao Praddo, a 50-year-old tattoo artist from Praia Grande, Brazil, shocked his online followers after posting images of his latest body alteration: the removal of his middle and index fingers on his left hand. After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1966, where he completed his military service without disciplinary issues. He later returned home, married, raised children and established himself as a dependable member of his community.

Rader worked in security, installing alarm systems, and also held a job at a grocery store. At church, he eventually became president of the congregation’s council. To those around him, he appeared disciplined, responsible and predictable.

Then came the murders.

In 1974, members of the Otero family were discovered dead inside their Wichita-area home. The parents and their two children had been strangled, launching an investigation that initially produced few answers.

The child’s severed head was found more than 100 miles from his home, but his body was never found. The details of the murder and who the murderer is have been shrouded in mystery.

Now, a true crime author has a new theory: Adam Walsh might not have been killed.

The common belief about what happened to Adam is that he was killed by serial killer Ottis Toole, who confessed to the murder on his prison deathbed. But author Arthur Jay Harris has been investigating the case for years and has come up with a few theories about what happened, including the theory that infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was the culprit.

Due to irregularities with the official records regarding Adam’s autopsy, dental records and other documents, Harris is wondering if the severed head was actually that of another child.

Harris dished on the theory in an interview with Uproxx:

The medical examiner who made the ID announced it quickly after the child was found, as if it wasn’t much of a disputed issue. It was based on a comparison of Adam’s dental chart, showing a molar with a filling on the cheek side, to the mouth of the found child. That and a visual ID at the morgue by a family friend of the Walshes. Remember, there was no torso so there were no fingerprints, and in 1981 forensic DNA matching wasn’t available.

Harris added that a great deal of documents simply weren’t there:

Here’s what should be in the medical examiner’s files: A copy of Adam’s dental chart; Adam’s dental X-rays and X-rays of the mouth of the found child; a forensic dental consultation report, affirming the ID; and a completed, signed autopsy report narrative, since an autopsy was performed. This led Harris to believe there’s a possibility that Adam was never found. And although it’s unlikely, it’s even possible that he’s alive.

Adam’s father John Walsh, who created “America’s Most Wanted” after his son’s death, has said he doesn’t believe the evidence put forth by Harris that Dahmer killed his son, according to The Washington Post. As for Harris’ latest theory, Walsh hasn’t commented.

Lily Hooper left her home in Oakdale, New South Wales, last Wednesday, reportedly planning to hike in Nattai National Park, roughly 62 miles away. She did not return that evening, prompting her family to contact authorities.

Her Hyundai was discovered near a difficult section of the national park at approximately 11 p.m., about an hour after she was reported missing. The discovery triggered a massive search operation through rugged and heavily wooded terrain.

Over the following days, roughly 1,000 people, including police officers, military personnel and civilian volunteers, took part in the effort to locate the teenager.

The search ended Thursday when volunteers discovered Hooper’s body.

But before her family learned the devastating truth, they were briefly given an entirely different message.

Around 11:30 a.m., authorities received a report that a person believed to be Hooper had been found alive. That information was quickly passed along to her family.

Within minutes, however, officials realized the initial report was incorrect and contacted the family with a correction.

New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Joseph Cassar apologized, saying the confusion stemmed from difficulties communicating through handheld devices in the remote environment.

Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon also expressed regret, acknowledging the additional trauma caused to Hooper’s loved ones by the mistaken notification.

The erroneous report even reached New South Wales Premier Chris Minns while he was appearing before a parliamentary committee. Believing the information to be confirmed, Minns announced that Hooper had been found alive and described the development as wonderful news.

The announcement was reversed only moments later.

Minns then informed lawmakers that the situation had changed and that Hooper had actually been found dead.

Authorities have not yet publicly established how the young woman died or whether she suffered injuries before her death.

Cassar said her remains were located away from an easily accessible trail and at a considerable distance from the vehicle she had left behind. Because of the difficult landscape, officials said removing her body from the park presented significant logistical challenges.

A helicopter extraction was proving particularly difficult, meaning rescuers expected that the remains might have to be transported out of the area on foot.

The tragedy came after days of increasingly desperate appeals from Hooper’s family. Her father, Jim, had urged search teams and volunteers to continue looking through the wilderness, expressing hope that his daughter would still be found alive.

Instead, the search ended with the devastating confirmation that the teenager had died.

Authorities have continued investigating the circumstances surrounding Hooper’s disappearance and death as her family prepares to mourn a young woman whose solo adventure ended in tragedy.

Joe Belgio, 44, is now largely confined to a hospital bed and requires extensive medical care, according to his attorneys. The lawsuit alleges that Belgio became critically ill after eating an oyster at Gibsons Steakhouse in Oak Brook, Illinois, during a July 2025 meal with his fiancée and relatives.

Their young daughter, who was about 5 months old at the time, was also present for the family gathering.

According to Belgio’s legal team, his condition deteriorated rapidly after the meal. He reportedly suffered cardiac arrest and remained without adequate oxygen for several minutes before being revived by emergency responders.

Belgio’s attorney, Scott O’Sullivan, said the former Marine has remained hospitalized since the medical crisis and has suffered extensive neurological damage.

The lawsuit claims medical testing later detected bacteria or other pathogens that can be associated with contaminated shellfish. Belgio’s attorneys contend that the illness was connected to the oyster served at the restaurant.

The steakhouse disputes that account.

A representative for the restaurant said its own investigation found no evidence linking the establishment to Belgio’s condition and noted that no other illnesses had been reported in connection with the restaurant. The business maintains that it expects the legal proceedings to establish the facts surrounding the case.

Belgio’s condition has created an enormous emotional and financial burden for his family. According to the lawsuit, he requires specialized rehabilitation and ongoing medical treatment, with expenses continuing to accumulate.

His fiancée, Melanie Stayer, said the incident has dramatically changed their lives.

She described the outing as an ordinary family celebration that suddenly turned into a life-altering emergency. Stayer also emphasized Belgio’s background as a Marine and firefighter, saying he had spent his career confronting dangerous situations to protect others.

“He deployed,” Stayer said, highlighting his military service. She also pointed to his work as a firefighter, saying he had repeatedly put himself in harm’s way.

A fundraising campaign organized to help the family with Belgio’s medical expenses has reportedly brought in more than $91,000.

His attorneys are seeking at least $50,000 in damages, along with compensation for continuing medical costs, according to the lawsuit.

O’Sullivan said the injuries have left Belgio with extremely limited cognitive abilities and that he may require round-the-clock assistance for the remainder of his life.

The case remains disputed, with Belgio’s family maintaining that a contaminated oyster caused the medical catastrophe while the restaurant rejects responsibility. The lawsuit will ultimately have to determine whether the food consumed during that family dinner was responsible for the devastating chain of events that followed.

Scottie Gwyn Crowell was discovered strapped into her car seat in the back of her grandmother’s vehicle on Aug. 13, according to police. The car was parked outside Owensboro Health Multicare in Madisonville, Kentucky, where the grandmother, 61-year-old Dr. Stacey Fazenbaker, was working that day.

Authorities said Fazenbaker had volunteered that morning to take Scottie to daycare. Instead, investigators say, she drove to work and apparently failed to realize the infant remained in the vehicle.

The child’s father went to the daycare around 4 p.m. to collect his daughter, only to learn that Scottie had never arrived that morning. Family members then discovered the baby was still inside Fazenbaker’s car.

Outside temperatures reportedly climbed to about 95 degrees, while the temperature inside the vehicle reached approximately 115 degrees.

Madisonville Police Major Jason McKnight said Fazenbaker rushed outside with coworkers after the discovery, but the child could not be saved. Officers also attempted emergency lifesaving measures after arriving at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation, and authorities have not filed criminal charges against Fazenbaker at this time.

Police said the grandmother underwent testing for alcohol and drugs, although investigators do not currently expect those tests to produce positive results. McKnight said prosecutors could potentially pursue charges later if the investigation establishes sufficient evidence.

An autopsy is expected to provide additional information regarding the official cause of Scottie’s death.

The tragedy has devastated the Crowell family. Fazenbaker had reportedly relocated to Madisonville approximately a year earlier so she could live closer to her daughter, Sydni Crowell, a 33-year-old OB-GYN.

Scottie was the second child of her parents and was born Sept. 20, 2025, following in vitro fertilization, according to reports.

Her family members have shared emotional tributes following the little girl’s death.

Emmy Fazenbaker, Scottie’s aunt and a sports reporter at Middle Tennessee State University, remembered the infant in a social media tribute, writing that the family loved their “sweet baby girl.”

Carmen Lizet Puch, 42, was discovered near her vehicle in a parking area at Great Falls Park in McLean, Virginia, according to Fairfax County authorities. Investigators said she suffered multiple stab wounds to her upper body and was also doused with gasoline before the suspect allegedly attempted to ignite her.

Puch was pronounced dead at the scene. She leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter.

Authorities identified the suspect as 19-year-old Alexis Antonio Cedillos-Campos, who has been charged with second-degree murder. Cedillos-Campos is originally from El Salvador.

The Department of Homeland Security says Cedillos-Campos entered the United States illegally near El Paso, Texas, in 2024 and was taken into custody by federal border authorities at the time. DHS officials have since criticized the previous administration’s handling of his case and are calling on Virginia officials to transfer him to Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody.

Puch and Cedillos-Campos reportedly worked together at Bitez, a halal restaurant in Herndon.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said investigators believe the suspect took a large fixed-blade knife from the restaurant before leaving the business. Surveillance footage allegedly shows him collecting the knife along with latex gloves and a water bottle.

Police contend Cedillos-Campos later filled the bottle with gasoline obtained from his motorcycle and used the fuel during the attack.

Investigators have not publicly established a motive. Davis said detectives believe Puch and the suspect had an intimate relationship, although authorities indicated that other individuals were connected to circumstances surrounding that relationship.

The violent killing has stunned Puch’s coworkers and those who knew her.

Restaurant owner Abdul Anwari described the victim as someone whose death was extremely difficult for employees to comprehend.

Friends and family remembered Puch as a quiet, hardworking woman who was devoted to providing a better future for her young daughter. She had moved to Reston after previously living in New Jersey.

Fundraising efforts have been launched to help cover funeral costs and expenses associated with caring for Puch’s daughter following the sudden loss of her mother.

One fundraiser also highlighted Puch’s elderly father, an 80-year-old veteran who frequently traveled to the United States to spend time with his daughter and granddaughter.

Meanwhile, the case has become part of a broader political dispute over immigration enforcement. DHS officials have argued that Cedillos-Campos should have been transferred to federal immigration authorities and accused the previous administration of failing to adequately enforce immigration laws.

Lucy Morgan was visiting Maine with her family in June 2024 when the devastating accident occurred at a lakeside rental property in Limerick. The girl had been sitting nearby while her 10-year-old brother played badminton outside.

According to the family’s wrongful death lawsuit, the aluminum portion of the boy’s racket separated from its wooden handle during a swing. The detached shaft traveled through the air and struck Lucy in the head, penetrating her skull and causing severe damage to her brain.

Lucy was rushed to a local hospital and later transported by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Doctors performed emergency surgery and removed part of her skull to relieve pressure caused by the injury.

Despite efforts to save her, Lucy suffered catastrophic brain damage. She died approximately four days after the accident, at about 4 a.m. on June 5.

Her family has now filed a lawsuit against Massachusetts-based Franklin Sports, alleging the badminton racket contained a dangerous design defect.

The complaint argues that the adhesive used to connect the racket’s metal shaft to its handle was inadequate. The lawsuit further alleges that the manufacturer failed to include a secondary mechanism that could have prevented the shaft from becoming detached if the primary connection failed.

The family also claims consumers were not sufficiently warned that the shaft could separate during normal play.

The lawsuit was filed in York County, Maine, and seeks accountability for the death of the young girl.

Lucy had been vacationing with her parents, Jesse and Bethany Morgan, and her siblings, Silas, Shiloh and Atticus. The badminton equipment was reportedly supplied with the rental cottage where the family was staying.

Investigators described the incident as an unintentional injury involving Lucy’s older brother.

Dramatic footage circulating online shows the wooden structure collapsing while several federal and local law enforcement officers were positioned on it during an operation in Huntsville. As the supports broke, the officers plunged downward with the deck, creating a chaotic scene.

The incident occurred July 21 while authorities were attempting to execute a warrant for Jacob Alexander Munoz, 26, who was accused of failing to comply with Missouri’s sex-offender registration requirements.

Munoz was not at the residence when the deck gave way. Authorities later located him and took him into custody.

The operation involved four deputy U.S. marshals and five Randolph County sheriff’s deputies. They were participating in Operation Adam’s Watch, a broader enforcement effort targeting individuals accused of failing to register as sex offenders or wanted in connection with other sexual offenses.

Authorities said the operation involved dozens of warrants.

The collapse left several members of the team injured. Five officers were ultimately taken to hospitals, with reported injuries including broken bones, muscle injuries and concussions. Officials said the injuries were not expected to be life-threatening.

Despite the violent nature of the collapse, authorities said the officers avoided what could have been an even more devastating outcome.

Steven Lewis, the U.S. marshal overseeing the Eastern District of Missouri, described the extent of the damaged structure as alarming and said he was grateful the officers escaped without more severe injuries.

The footage quickly spread online, attracting hundreds of thousands of views and a wave of reactions. Some commenters responded with jokes about the unexpected collapse, while others questioned the condition of the deck and the circumstances surrounding the operation.

Guthrie has been missing for months, and the case has remained unresolved despite an extensive investigation and repeated efforts to find new clues.

The remains were reportedly located in the Tucson area, near a hillside covered with saguaro cacti and overlooking a heavily traveled roadway. Sheriff’s deputies were observed in the area Monday as investigators examined the location.

Several law enforcement vehicles were positioned near the entrance to a residential property, while deputies were seen walking farther into the surrounding hills. The area includes homes set back from the road by long driveways and is near the edge of Tucson.

Authorities have not publicly identified the person whose remains were discovered. Investigators have also not provided details about who found them or exactly when the discovery occurred.

A senior law enforcement official familiar with the investigation said authorities do not currently believe the remains are connected to Guthrie.

That distinction does not necessarily mean investigators have scientifically established the identity of the remains. Determining whether unidentified remains belong to a missing person can require forensic testing, particularly when the remains have been exposed to the elements for an extended period.

Extreme desert conditions could further complicate the process. Prolonged exposure to intense heat and sunlight, along with possible animal activity, may affect the condition of the remains and make identification more challenging.

Guthrie disappeared from her home in Arizona’s Catalina Foothills after she was last seen on Jan. 31. Investigators believe she may have been abducted from the residence. Her phone and important medications were reportedly left behind.

The disappearance has generated national attention because of the limited number of confirmed clues released publicly.

Several months into the investigation, authorities released the contents of a ransom note and a subsequent letter sent to Guthrie’s family. The materials contained a claim that she had died, and investigators hoped making the information public would encourage someone with knowledge of the case to come forward.

Authorities have also continued analyzing DNA evidence recovered from Guthrie’s residence.

The defense had asked for Judge John Roach to be removed from the appellate proceedings, pointing to comments he made in a television interview following Anthony’s June trial.

Most people who leave food out for wild birds are happy simply to watch them return. For one Seattle girl, however, feeding the neighborhood crows has led to an unusual exchange: the birds appear to bring her small gifts in return.

Gabi Mann was just 4 years old when she began attracting the attention of a local flock of crows. As a child, she frequently dropped pieces of food while eating, and the birds quickly learned that she could be a reliable source of snacks.

A few years later, Gabi and her mother, Lisa, began deliberately feeding the birds as part of their daily routine. They supplied fresh water, peanuts and pieces of dog food around their yard.

Then something unexpected started happening.

The crows began leaving objects for Gabi.

Over time, the girl accumulated more than 60 items, including beads, bits of jewelry, Lego pieces, screws and other small objects. Many of the items are shiny and small enough for a crow to carry.

Gabi carefully records the presents, documenting where and when each one appeared. She has even identified several favorites.

One treasured item is a key chain that features the word “best.” Another favorite is a heart-shaped object that she interprets as a sign of affection from her feathered visitors.

The young bird lover is so protective of her collection that she warns visitors to admire the objects without handling them.

“They are my type,” Gabi has said of the birds, pointing to their apparent preference for shiny treasures and Lego.

Her mother has also witnessed behavior that convinced her the relationship may go beyond simple food-seeking.

On one occasion, Lisa lost the lens cap from her camera while photographing a bald eagle. When she returned to the yard, she discovered the missing cap sitting beside the family’s bird bath.

Curious about how it got there, Lisa checked footage from the family’s bird camera.

The footage appeared to show that the crows had found the cap, brought it back and even placed it in the bird bath before leaving it where Lisa could find it.

Recovering a climber who dies above 8,000 meters can be far more difficult than reaching the summit itself. The area is known as the “death zone,” where oxygen is dangerously scarce, temperatures can plunge and powerful winds can turn a recovery operation into a fight for survival.

The risks were made painfully clear during a 2019 mission on Nepal’s 27,838-foot Makalu. Rescue specialist Gesman Tamang was leading a six-person team attempting to retrieve a climber’s remains when a Nepali soldier accompanying the group began showing symptoms of altitude sickness.

Tamang instructed soldier Narayan Singh to rest at a high-altitude camp and descend when possible. The team continued toward its objective, eventually spending more than a day freeing the dead climber from the mountain and transporting the remains toward Camp III.

When they returned, they discovered Singh barely alive inside a tent. Despite attempts to administer oxygen and save him, he died.

The team was forced to leave Singh behind temporarily while completing its original recovery mission. Another group later brought his remains down.

Such missions remain a grim reality on Everest. Hundreds of bodies are believed to remain on the mountain, particularly in the treacherous region between the upper camps and the summit. Some are buried beneath snow and ice, while others are trapped in locations that make retrieval nearly impossible.

The cost can also be staggering. Recovery crews need specialized equipment, supplemental oxygen and enough personnel to operate safely in extreme conditions. A single body can require tens of thousands of dollars to retrieve.

And money is only part of the problem.

A body may be frozen solid and locked into the terrain. Rescuers sometimes have to chip away ice or dig through snow before the remains can be placed on a lightweight sled. From there, teams slowly drag and lower the load down steep slopes and fixed ropes.

The journey can take several days and involve thousands of feet of elevation loss before a helicopter can transport the remains from a lower camp.

Weather creates another major obstacle. High winds can expose recovery workers to frostbite, exhaustion and other potentially fatal conditions. A narrow window of favorable weather may determine whether a mission succeeds or has to be abandoned.

The physical difficulty is matched by the emotional burden. Recovery workers must handle human remains while climbers heading toward the summit pass nearby. They must remain focused despite the disturbing reality surrounding them.

The position of a body can make the work even harder. Remains cannot always be moved into an ideal position for transportation, particularly when frozen into the mountain. Rescuers must work with the body exactly as they find it, carefully securing it before beginning the dangerous descent.

Despite the enormous risks, Nepal periodically launches recovery operations to clear bodies from Everest and other Himalayan peaks. Officials say the effort can provide a measure of closure for families while also reducing the psychological impact on climbers who encounter bodies along the route.

For experienced rescuers such as Tamang, however, the work comes with a sobering perspective.

After completing numerous recovery missions across Nepal’s highest mountains, Tamang has made clear that he would rather prevent a tragedy than recover someone after the fact.

His preference is simple: saving a climber’s life is far more rewarding than bringing that climber home after death.

The disaster unfolded in 79 A.D., when Mount Vesuvius erupted near the Roman settlement of Pompeii. The volcano unleashed an enormous surge of volcanic material, burying the city and its residents beneath layers of ash and debris.

Today, millions of visitors travel to Pompeii each year, with the preserved human figures among the site’s most recognizable attractions. Their lifelike poses can make it appear as though the victims were instantly transformed into stone.

That impression, however, is misleading.

The figures were created through an ingenious archaeological technique developed during excavations in the 19th century.

As archaeologists dug through the hardened volcanic material, they discovered unusual cavities where human remains had once been. The bodies had decomposed after being surrounded by material that hardened around them, leaving behind hollow spaces that preserved the contours of the victims.

Archaeologists eventually realized they could fill those cavities with plaster. Once the surrounding volcanic material was carefully removed, the hardened plaster revealed remarkably detailed impressions of the people who had died nearly 2,000 years earlier.

The result was an eerie replica of each victim’s final position.

In other words, the famous “bodies” are essentially negative impressions made visible through modern archaeological work. They are not people who were literally turned into stone by the eruption.

The technique was pioneered under archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli, whose work helped transform the excavation and preservation of Pompeii. The plaster method became one of the site’s most distinctive archaeological features.

Modern scientists have added more sophisticated technology to the process. Imaging methods, including CT scans, can provide researchers with additional information about what remains inside some of the casts. In certain cases, modern materials may also be used instead of traditional plaster.

Yet the basic principle remains remarkably similar to the method developed more than a century ago.

The preservation of the casts has also taken on added importance because Pompeii itself has endured damage long after the eruption. During World War II, bombing raids struck the archaeological site, destroying portions of earlier reconstruction work.

That means today’s Pompeii is a combination of ancient Roman structures and generations of modern preservation, restoration and reconstruction.

The distinction does not make the site any less remarkable. If anything, the story behind the casts adds another layer to Pompeii’s legacy.

What appears at first glance to be a collection of ancient stone victims is actually the result of an extraordinary collaboration between the forces of nature, the remains left behind by the dead and the ingenuity of archaeologists determined to preserve their stories.

The figures may not be petrified bodies, but they still offer an unusually intimate glimpse into the final moments of people caught in one of history’s most famous volcanic disasters.
