The diner shared a photo of his receipt on Reddit after visiting Earls Kitchen + Bar in Denver, Colorado, on Oct. 27. The restaurant chain, which operates locations in cities including Miami and Nashville, promotes itself as a dining destination offering globally inspired food in a welcoming atmosphere.

But the additional charge left the customer anything but satisfied.

According to the receipt, he ordered a deluxe burger priced at $24.75 and added a side of truffle fries for $3. Before the bill was finalized, however, he noticed a separate administrative fee equal to 3% of the purchase.

After taxes and the extra charge were included, the total came to $30.86.

The customer questioned what the fee was supposed to cover, expressing frustration that an ordinary meal had come with another unexpected expense.

He described the charge as a form of extortion and said the experience had left him so irritated that he decided against leaving a tip.

His post quickly attracted attention from other Reddit users, many of whom questioned why restaurants were adding administrative charges to customers’ bills.

An electrician who lost both arms in a horrific workplace accident is making remarkable strides toward regaining movement after undergoing a pioneering double arm and shoulder transplant.

Felix Gretarsson, 48, was working in Iceland 23 years ago when a misunderstanding with coworkers caused him to come into contact with a live electrical wire carrying 11,000 volts. The massive shock sent him falling more than 30 feet onto frozen ground, leaving him with devastating injuries.

In addition to breaking his neck and back in three places, the electrical current caused severe burns to his arms.

Gretarsson later recalled waiting for an ambulance in excruciating pain. After arriving at the hospital, doctors placed him in a medically induced coma. He remained unconscious for three months and eventually woke to discover that both arms had been amputated.

Surgeons initially removed his arms above the elbows, but repeated infections forced further amputations until the limbs were removed up to his shoulders. He underwent 54 operations during the difficult years that followed.

The physical and emotional toll pushed Gretarsson toward drug and alcohol abuse. He later described using substances to escape the memories and pain, until people close to him made it clear that he needed to turn his life around.

With help from Alcoholics Anonymous and after receiving two liver transplants, he began moving toward a healthier future.

A potential breakthrough came in 2007, when a French surgeon who had successfully performed a hand transplant visited Iceland for a lecture. Gretarsson approached the physician, who agreed to review his case and explore whether an arm transplant could be possible.

He eventually moved to Lyon, France, to be near the medical specialists who might help make that dream a reality. While living there, he met Sylwia, a Polish yoga instructor. The pair fell in love, married and built a home together with their two dogs.

After years of waiting, Gretarsson received life-changing news in January: Doctors had identified a suitable donor and were ready to proceed with the operation.

The surgery was hailed as a medical milestone, marking the first double transplant of both arms and shoulders. Although doctors expect it could take up to three years to determine the procedure’s full success, Gretarsson’s early recovery has offered encouraging signs.

Nerve regeneration takes time, with nerves typically growing about one millimeter daily. Before the operation, doctors explained that restoring sensation and movement throughout his arms could require years of rehabilitation.

Kisha Avita-Wilson said her son, Don’Vyaire Avita-Mays, affectionately known as “Baby Don” by relatives, died Oct. 24 after an incident at a Halloween trunk-or-treat gathering in Kenosha. The little boy would have celebrated his first birthday on Oct. 26.

Avita-Wilson had brought her two older daughters to the family event, where children received balloon animals. She said the family had tried to keep the balloons away from the infant, but one eventually came loose.

According to the grieving mother, Baby Don managed to grab the balloon and bite it. The tied portion then became lodged in his lower throat, creating an immediate medical emergency.

Avita-Wilson said she quickly removed her son from his car seat and attempted to help him breathe. She performed CPR and tried to remove the obstruction with her fingers, while another person nearby also attempted to assist.

The baby soon turned blue and went into cardiac arrest, she recalled.

Emergency responders arrived after an ambulance was called and worked to remove the object. Medical personnel reportedly used a tube inserted through the child’s throat, along with pliers, in an effort to retrieve the balloon fragment.

Despite those efforts, Baby Don could not be saved.

The mother said accepting his death has been especially difficult, adding that she struggles to speak about her son as though he is no longer alive.

The tragedy has also taken a serious toll on Avita-Wilson, who is currently 30 weeks pregnant. According to a GoFundMe message shared by her aunt and adoptive mother, the emotional strain led to a hospital stay after she experienced early contractions and premature cervical dilation.

The fundraising campaign was created to help the family cover funeral costs for the infant. Its message remembered Don’Vyaire as a beloved child whose cheerful laugh and bright smile brought happiness to those around him.

Relatives also asked supporters to keep Avita-Wilson, her two daughters and her unborn baby in their prayers as the family navigates the devastating loss.

Now, the mother hopes her experience will prevent another family from enduring a similar tragedy. She is urging parents to recognize the potential danger balloons can pose to young children, particularly infants who may put small pieces in their mouths.

Investigators located the vehicle approximately 30 minutes after the collision at a nearby business complex. The driver was released from police custody but remains a suspect as detectives continue examining the circumstances surrounding the crash. The collision forced officials to close a portion of Route 272 between Pulaski Highway and Lums Road for roughly three hours while emergency personnel and investigators worked at the scene.

A UK mother is warning parents about the risks of allowing others to kiss their babies after her toddler was left blind in one eye due to a serious herpes infection.

Michelle Saaiman said she initially struggled to believe doctors when they informed her that her son, Juwon, had a serious eye infection. What began as a seemingly routine medical concern eventually resulted in permanent damage that left the toddler blind in the affected eye.

The ordeal began in August 2024, when Juwon was just 16 months old. His parents initially thought he had developed a common eye infection and sought medical treatment. Although doctors prescribed antibiotics, his condition worsened within days.

Saaiman later described the frightening experience in a Facebook post, explaining that her son’s eye appeared to have something growing inside it. More concerningly, the toddler showed no signs of pain as he scratched his own eyeball.

His mother was horrified to discover an open wound about 4 millimeters wide on her young son’s eye.

Further medical examinations revealed that Juwon had developed an eye infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, the same virus responsible for cold sores.

Since both parents tested negative for the virus, doctors suspected Juwon may have contracted it from someone else, possibly through a kiss from a person with an active cold sore.

The experience prompted Saaiman to warn other families about the potential dangers of allowing friends and relatives to kiss infants, particularly when someone has an active cold sore.

Although doctors worked for weeks to control the infection, the damage to Juwon’s cornea was already severe.

Saaiman explained that the infection destroyed much of the eye’s ability to function, leaving her son unable to see. The damage disrupted the connection between the eye and the brain, and the protective gel inside the eye eventually dried up, leaving the eye dry.

Despite the heartbreaking setback, the family remains hopeful for a possible recovery.

Doctors are considering surgery to transfer nerves from Juwon’s leg to his eye socket in an attempt to restore the connection between his eye and brain. Should the surgery prove successful, Juwon could become eligible for a corneal transplant that may help restore his sight.

The family’s experience highlights the importance of taking unusual eye symptoms seriously and seeking prompt medical care. Herpes simplex infections can sometimes cause serious eye complications, making precautions around newborns and young children especially important.

“I liked how it looked,” he said of the split tongue, describing the result as both attention-grabbing and relatively subtle.

The procedures have not been without complications. Jesus described splitting his tongue as the most painful experience of his transformation. He also said that removing his nose became a lengthy and complicated ordeal after an error during the procedure created additional problems.

He eventually sought help from body modification specialist Gattoo Moreno, who repaired the damage. Jesus said he is now satisfied with the outcome.

His appearance has also affected his personal life. While he embraces his distinctive look, he acknowledged that some friends and relatives have distanced themselves from him because they disagree with his decisions. Still, he says he does not feel frightened or anxious before undergoing new modifications.

More recently, Jesus has collaborated with Moreno to recreate the appearance of the Amphibian Man from Guillermo del Toro’s 2017 film, “The Shape of Water.” The Oscar-winning movie features a mysterious amphibious humanoid discovered inside a secret government facility during the Cold War.

Jesus has continued expanding his tattoos to resemble the character more closely. He is also considering another highly unusual procedure involving splitting his testicles, a modification that would take his transformation into even more extreme territory.

He estimates that his body modifications have cost between 300,000 and 400,000 Mexican pesos, equivalent to approximately £12,780 to £17,040. Even after spending that substantial amount, he has no intention of stopping.

For Jesus, the transformation remains an ongoing personal project rather than a finished achievement.

Olivia Bordenet, a Chicago contestant, competed on the Oct. 22 episode against Diana Baker of Miami and Larry Lam of Benson, North Carolina. Despite delivering a strong performance and collecting $25,598 in winnings, Bordenet couldn’t crack the final puzzle.

Lam, a social worker who enjoys running, got his first big break by solving “Sitting In the Front Row” for $1,750. Baker, who is passionate about helping abandoned dogs and cats, made several correct letter selections in the “Brainy” crossword puzzle before choosing an incorrect letter and losing her turn.

Lam took advantage of the opportunity, solving “Insightful, Wise, Intelligent” and earning $5,100.

Bordenet soon moved into the lead after correctly answering “Adrenaline Rush,” which earned her a trip to Australia and pushed her total to $21,598. She kept her advantage by solving two of the three Triple Toss-Up puzzles, while Baker answered the remaining one.

During the final regular puzzle, Bordenet uncovered most of the letters, but Lam ultimately got the chance to solve after the last spin. His correct response, “That’s a Big Number,” added $1,500 to his total, bringing his winnings to $6,650. Baker finished the game with $3,000.

Bordenet entered the Bonus Round with $25,598 and brought her mother and fiancé, Jack, along for the exciting moment. The category was “Phrase,” and she received the standard letters R, S, T, L, N and E before selecting C, H, V and O.

The board showed the incomplete phrase “THE _ _ _T _S OVER.” With the clock counting down, Bordenet attempted several answers, including “The Best Is Over,” “The Worst Is Over,” “The Most Is Over” and “The Mist Is Over.”

None was correct.

The solution was “The Wait Is Over,” and the envelope held $55,000. Had she solved it, her total winnings would have climbed to $80,598.

“Bummer,” Bordenet said after discovering the answer.

Host Ryan Seacrest offered a lighthearted response, telling her she had found the perfect man and that the wait was over.

The near-miss prompted reactions from viewers online. Some expressed surprise that Bordenet had missed the phrase, while others said they had figured it out from home and were disappointed she couldn’t claim the additional money.

The interview marked Omar’s first media appearance since federal agents searched her Washington, D.C., residence on Oct. 12 as part of a criminal investigation involving potential discrepancies in her immigration and naturalization records.

Omar addressed the persistent rumors about her former husband during a conversation with host Chris Hayes, tracing the claims to an online publication in Somalia.

She said the speculation began when someone published an allegation suggesting Elmi was her brother or another close relative. Omar has repeatedly rejected that claim, along with accusations that their marriage was intended to help him obtain immigration benefits.

Federal authorities have not publicly provided a detailed account of the allegations under investigation. Homeland Security Investigations agents carried out the search after obtaining a court-approved warrant. U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew J. The Vatican announced the latest development after physicians completed further evaluations of the pope’s condition. Doctors Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora said testing identified the tumor as pulmonary adenocarcinoma, a common form of lung cancer, but confirmed that the disease remained localized.

A subsequent review by cancer specialists determined that no additional therapy was needed, according to the Vatican statement.

Leo underwent surgery on Oct. 13 to remove the lower lobe of his right lung after being diagnosed with the condition. The procedure was performed using a minimally invasive, camera-guided technique, allowing surgeons to operate without a traditional large incision.

Authorities have commended Bend carpenter Kaylub Giamanco, 36, for confronting the gunman during the Oct. 15 attack at Silver Rail Elementary School. The attacker, 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, had already killed a teacher and three children before Giamanco confronted him.

Giamanco said he ended up near the school after changing his lunch plans twice. He initially packed a snack, then decided to head home to eat leftover tacos with his wife. He also passed up a possible stop at a masonry store to pick up bolts for work.

Just before 1 p.m., those decisions brought him near the school, where he said he saw a man dressed in black firing a long gun at a motorist and a woman working on the school grounds.

The father of two girls, ages 5 and 10, recognized the danger and reached for the .40-caliber handgun he kept in his truck. After calling 911, he told the dispatcher he needed to act before more people were killed.

Giamanco approached the building while staying low to avoid being seen. He said he could hear children crying out for help and gunfire as he crawled toward a broken window. Inside, he found the gunman struggling with a teacher over the weapon.

Believing the teenager had not noticed him, Giamanco fired. The teacher ran from the room, apparently unaware that Giamanco was trying to stop the attacker. When the gunman continued reaching for his firearm, Giamanco fired twice more because he feared additional victims could be hurt.

After police arrived, Giamanco asked to call his family. He first contacted his wife to explain why he would not be joining her for the lunch they had planned. He then called his mother, who reassured him that he had done the right thing.

But Giamanco has struggled to view himself as a hero. He remains haunted by the children who died and said memories of the shooting continue to disrupt his sleep.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz praised Giamanco and the teacher who fought the gunman, emphasizing the courage both showed during the crisis.

Giamanco has yet to meet the families of the three children killed. He said he wants to tell their parents how sorry he is that he could not save their children.

Although he is grateful that his actions may have prevented further deaths, the carpenter continues to struggle with the lives lost. He now hopes to use his voice to make a difference, while coping with the trauma of the day he feared would be his last.

A Michigan homeowner who opened fire on a group of suspected garage burglars, killing a teenager and injuring another, will face trial after a judge determined prosecutors presented enough evidence to move forward with the charges.

Dayton Knapton, 24, of White Lake Township, is charged with manslaughter, assault with intent to murder and multiple weapons offenses stemming from the July shooting. The incident left a 17-year-old dead and another teenager wounded.

During a recent hearing, Judge Kelly Kostin ruled that prosecutors had met the required evidentiary threshold on all four counts. She acknowledged that Knapton had reportedly experienced previous break-ins, which could have contributed to his fear that night. However, she emphasized that the law does not permit someone to use deadly force solely to defend personal property.

Kostin also questioned whether Knapton’s self-defense claim could withstand scrutiny, particularly after reviewing security footage showing him firing toward the suspects as they fled.

The shooting occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on July 8, when Knapton allegedly spotted seven people entering his detached garage on surveillance footage. The property, located in the 9000 block of Mandon Drive, had reportedly been targeted in earlier attempted burglaries.

Police said Knapton went outside and fired at the group as its members left the garage. The suspects scattered, and authorities were later notified that one 17-year-old had been found near Huron Valley Hospital in Commerce Township. Another teenager was taken to a separate hospital. One victim died, while the other survived the shooting.

Knapton’s defense team has argued that he was abruptly awakened from sleep and feared for his safety because of the earlier incidents. His attorney also questioned officers about advice investigators allegedly gave Knapton after a previous break-in, including recommendations to strengthen security around his property.

But prosecutors have maintained that protecting a dirt bike or other possessions did not justify the use of lethal force.

White Lake Township police officer Frank Wright testified that he asked Knapton about blood discovered inside the garage after arriving at the scene. According to Wright, Knapton responded that he had needed to protect himself and his belongings. When asked how he had done so, Knapton allegedly identified his 9mm handgun.

Video presented at an earlier hearing appeared to show Knapton firing several rounds at the suspects as they ran away. Prosecutors previously alleged that he initially shot through a locked, windowless garage door before firing five additional rounds while the group fled.

Other officers also described Knapton’s account of the confrontation. Officer Mark Kas-Mikha testified that Knapton claimed the suspects had moved toward him, although the officer said the footage did not appear to support that description. Officer Jessica Snow, who knew Knapton from her earlier work as a school resource officer, recounted a similar explanation he had provided.

A neighbor testified that the garage had reportedly been targeted on multiple occasions and believed the suspects were interested in dirt bikes. Knapton’s attorney also noted that he had installed a motion detector following previous attempted break-ins.

In spite of those circumstances, legal experts have questioned whether the shooting qualified as lawful self-defense. The central issue is whether Knapton faced an imminent threat of serious physical harm, rather than simply an attempt to steal property.

Kostin ordered Knapton to remain on a GPS monitoring tether as the case proceeds. The ruling does not establish his guilt, but it clears the way for a trial where prosecutors and the defense will present their competing accounts of what happened that night.

Gonzalez earned $5,000 for the episode, bringing his two-day winnings to $75,850. Moore finished with $18,050 for the game, raising her overall total to $54,835.

Druckmiller’s prize package included a special NBA kickoff experience connected to a Celtics-Pistons matchup. The reward featured courtside access, VIP treatment, a photograph at the announcers’ table and hotel accommodations in Detroit, pushing her accumulated winnings to $94,701.

As the clock ticked down, Druckmiller and Horry struggled to identify the answer. She began saying “Just the” but could not complete the phrase before time expired.

The correct solution was “Just the Facts.” A $40,000 prize sat inside the envelope, meaning a successful answer would have raised her total winnings to $134,701.

The missed opportunity quickly sparked frustration among viewers on Reddit. One commenter questioned how Druckmiller could overlook the answer, while another said they had been shouting the solution at the television. McDonald’s previously rejected claims that its fish sandwich had become smaller, maintaining that the product’s size had remained unchanged for decades. Nevertheless, some customers continue to argue that the sandwich no longer looks as substantial as they remember.

One Reddit user who ordered the item after several years without eating it said the sandwich appeared surprisingly tiny, comparing its size to a toy meal. Another customer complained that the fish patty barely covered the bun, which the diner described as roughly the size of a baseball.

The struggle quickly intensified, prompting Borda’s brother to rush in and help.

During the confrontation, the firearm discharged, sending a bullet into Borda’s pickup truck. The vehicle was left with a visible bullet hole, but neither brother was struck by the gunfire, according to Borda.

The danger was not over. As the fight continued, another alleged suspect attempted to join the confrontation. Borda’s brother reportedly intervened, grabbing the teenager as the two brothers worked to restrain the group.

Together, the men managed to force the suspects onto the pavement and hold them there until law enforcement arrived.

Prince George’s County police officers subsequently took all four teenagers into custody, Borda said. The suspects were reported to be in jail following the incident.
